It's refreshing to hear that such a diverse range of musicians are using Macs to make their music. I just stumbled upon another -- Torley Wong. I found out about him while browsing through Hotline music sites. His work is really nice orchestral, electronic music with quirky edges similar to techno musicians Aphex Twin, Orbital, and Prodigy... all Mac devotees themselves, by the way. It's amazing stuff for such a young man.
After I e-mailed him with some inquiries, Torley told me that he is strongly Mac-biased, that his old Quadra 660AV is featured in the album art of his TECHNO CD, and that he recently bought a G3. He said that he originally chose Macintosh because it fufills this "conceptual equation" of his (pretty cute):
efficiency + elegance = excellence
He's looking for copyright clearance info for the signature Macintosh startup sound and the standard system beeps because he's planning to sample them for an upcoming track. Anybody who has any info should contact him via his home page, at:

Date: Thu, 5 Nov 1998 10:46:02 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: PR - Neatnik 2.0.3
This announcement is from:
<mailto: KarlBunker@aol.com>
Macintosh shareware author Karl Bunker announces an update release of the shareware utility "Neatnik". Neatnik is a utility that neatens up your Mac Finder desktop by setting the location, size and "View" characteristics of folder windows.
Neatnik 2.0.3 is compatible with Mac OS 8.5, and uses the new Navigation Services file selection dialog available under Mac OS 8.5.
Neatnik neatens up your Mac Finder desktop by setting the location, size and "View" characteristics of folder windows. These characteristics can all be set by hand, of course, but Neatnik allows you to batch-process the contents of a folder (including all levels of enclosed folders), or an entire disk.
Neatnik works on three basic sets of folder window properties: location, size and "View" characteristics. You can choose to change any or all of these properties.
Folder window location: The folder window locations can be set to offset from their "parent" (containing) folder's location, so that successive levels of folders will open to "cascading", successively-offset locations on your desktop.
Folder window size: Folder windows can be sized in any of three ways: given the same size as their parent folder, set to their "zoomed" size, or set to their "zoomed" height and given their parent window's width.
Folder window "View" characteristics: This is the aspect of Neatnik that will be most useful to many users. With Neatnik you can set all the View characteristics for a batch of windows at once, rather than having to painstakingly set them one window at a time, or being constrained to the single set of "Standard Views" that Mac OS 8.5 allows.
Neatnik will appeal to anyone seeking to bring a little order and organization to their desktop. It is also a powerful tool for those preparing CD-ROMs or floppy disks for publication. Neatnik provides an easy and automated way to prepare the disk so that its folders open in neatly arranged positions, and with their other characteristics set up consistently.
Neatnik is an application. It does not install any System extensions or "patch" the system in any way. Therefore there is virtually no risk of compatibility problems. Because it is a standard Mac application, rather than a simple AppleScript, it has a sophisticated and elegant user interface for setting its various preferences.
Neatnik is shareware, with a fee of $10.00. Neatnik is available from Karl Bunker's Web site at the URL given below, and will be appearing in the major Macintosh download sites shortly.
Neatnik requires the scriptable Finder (available with System 7.5 and later).
Karl Bunker has been a Macintosh shareware developer and contract programmer since 1993. He has produced a wide range of highly acclaimed and award winning software for the Mac, including MultiTimer Pro, Keep Trying!, FloorTiles and Barney Blaster.

This announcement is from:
<mailto: "Craig Benting" craig@netfu.com>
Well, we are finally ready to get this service going. If you haven't already received an e-mail (because you voted Yes on our web site), please begin the process of opening your AppleShareIP.com account by going to <http://www.asip.com!> And again, thanks to all who have helped us pioneer this service for the Mac community! (Woohoo!)
Here are the AppleShare IP service's features (basically the same features as the FTP filespace you got with your dial-up account):
* You use AppleShare to access your files in a Mac-like way * You can access your account's files from anywhere you access the internet via FTP or AppleShare (using the web browser is also possible). * The server is backed up once per month * The price is a flat $0.13/mb/month.
Here are the extras/differences of our Dantz backup service available at:
<http://www.netfu.com> (our parent company):
* You use Retrospect 4.1 to backup your data to our server over the internet (Retrospect compresses & encrypts the data before FTP'ing it to our server). * The server(s) is monitored 24 hours per day, 7 days per week for downtime. * The server(s) is protected by a UPS system with up to 30 hours of capacity. * All user backup data is backed up to an off-site location every day. * All user backup data is backed up once a month (to an off-site location) so you can access any month's backup data/files for up to one year. * 25% off of both services if you have open accounts for both services. That's $0.10/mb/month for AppleShareIP service and $0.15/mb/month for Dantz backup service (or 25% off the higher level backup services).
The pricing is as follows:
30mb-500mb of space: $0.20/mb/month 501mb-1gb of space: $0.15/mb/month 1gb-5gb of space: $0.10/mb/month 5gb of space: Contact <mailto:sales@netfu.com> for a quote.
It's important to note that the AppleShare IP service is separate and different from the Dantz backup service. The Dantz backup service doesn't offer AppleShare access to that account's files -- it makes more sense to people who need a good, reliable data backup service more than an AppleShare service. But, we realize some people may want both services, so we're offering discounts on the 'bundling' of both services (25% off).

This announcement is from:
<mailto: "Earl Sondreal" earls@bitheadz.com>
BitHeadz, Inc. has released Retro AS-1 Analog Synthesizer for Mac and Windows, a program that uses your computer's processor to generate analog sounds and textures that previously required expensive hardware synthesizers.
With Retro AS-1 you can design your own new and exciting sounds, thanks to the familiar analog style editor screen. The user can select from 9 different waveforms to assign to Retro's 3 oscillators and then alter the sound using its versatile filter, modulation, and effects controls. Retro is capable of playing back several different sounds at once when used with a MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) compatible sequencer program. You can create multi-instrument compositions and play them back all within your computer, and you can select from over 1000 of Retro AS-1's included sounds to play live from a MIDI keyboard. You can also trigger sounds from the on-screen keyboard or the Qwerty keys on your computer. An extensive arpeggiator is also included for easily creating interesting repeating patterns. The software is available on CD-ROM, and no additional hardware is required for the Mac. The PC version requires Direct Sound compatible sound card.
Retro AS-1 will appeal to all musicians interested in investing in quality products that enhance their production and creation capabilities. Retro AS-1 is an ideal product for professional and semi-professional musicians, multimedia and game developers, and home studio musicians who are creating high-quality music with their computers.
