On the December 1 episode of NYPD Blue (the first episode following the "death" of Jimmy Smits), a Power Macintosh spends a fair amount of time on screen as a backdrop to a conversation between Det. Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) and his D.A. wife, Sylvia Costas (Sharon Lawrence). The shots are nicely framed to show the desktop system and monitor.
Disney is hosting a contest at their website to celebrate the release of "A Bugs Life." The grand prize? One of four iMacs. To find out more about the contest go to the "Bugs Life Sweepstakes" site.

On a live Disney Online broadcast of the world premiere of A Bug's Life, an interchange between the emcee and Tim Allen prominently featured the Mac. It is about 57:40 into the broadcast.
MC: We're live on the internet. Can you just wave to all the surfers out there?
Allen: (Allen looks directly at camera.) I hope they're Mac people. Because this is Pixar, baby. It's all about Mac.

Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1998 08:07:10 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: PR - Icon Tools 1.6 Released
This announcement is from:
<mailto: "Alberto Ricci" alberto@riccisoft.com>
Riccisoft and Alessandro Levi Montalcini just released version 1.6 of Icon Tools, an extremely innovative tool which lets users personalize their desktops by modifying any icon in many creative ways.
With a single click, Icon Tools can copy, paste, rotate, flip, reduce, or apply special effects to file, folder and disk icons. It can also create thumbnail preview icons for pictures and movies of any kind!
Version 1.6 not only takes advantage of the new 32-bit icons under Mac OS 8.5, but it also sports an editor for 8-bit icon masks! You will now be able to create your own translucent icons and make anti-aliased or shaded areas blend perfectly with the background.
Breaking the barriers of the Finder's labels, Icon Tools provides a unique Icon Stamps feature: instantly mark your documents and applications with tags, symbols, markers, labels, widgets of any kind - more than a hundred are included in the package, but you can make your own stamps too!
Even on crowded hard disks and cluttered desktops, Icon Tools will let you identify important files at a glance. Mark documents to be printed with a small printer stamp, files to be e-mailed with an e-mail symbol, tear apart the icons of obsolete documents... the possibilities are endless.
Icon Tools also lets users easily add Icon Frames to any existing icon. Adding backgrounds or making folder and disk icons for your favorite applications is easier than ever. Included are frames for making custom CD-ROM or Zip disk icons with no effort!
Icon Tools is a $15 shareware Contextual Menu Manager plug-in for Mac OS 8.
Icon Tools is a CNET/Download.com Top Pick and Most Popular item! You can download it now from:

This tidbit is from:
<mailto: "Peter C.S. Adams" adamsp@cs.umb.edu>
I just got Emerson, Lake & Palmer's new live album "Then & Now" which features classic live tracks from the memorable Cal Jam concert in 1974. ELP has long been a technological vanguard, and wrote a song in 1973 about a computer run amok against a hero who sings "No computer stands in my way ... let the maps of war be drawn!" -- obviously predicting the rise of Microsoft and Windows. :->
Among the best parts was the following in the liner notes: "Mixed in studios, homes, hotels, and backstage across the US to an Otari DAT recorder. Pre-mastered on Digidesign Pro Tools 888/24 using Apple computers."

Working in a Cross-platform World: Email
By Paul Shields <http://applelinks.pair.com/business_mac/email.shtml>
As the Internet becomes more pervasive, users are exchanging more and more data everyday. Companies often send proposals to clients via email for review and response. In last week's column, we looked at ways to deal with files across platforms including translation and emulators. While dealing with PC files on floppies is relatively easy, navigating the standards for exchanging files via email is difficult at times. Getting the file received via email into a usable state can be a challenge.

WAVES IN MOTION RELEASES OAZIUM CHARTS PLUG-IN FOR FILEMAKER PRO
Easy-to-build graphs change the way people look at their data

TORONTO, Canada. December 5, 1998. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a well designed graph is sometimes the only thing that can help you make sense of all that information in your FileMaker database. The problem, however, has always been the great difficulty in building these graphs.
Until now.
oAzium Charts is a new FileMaker plug-in from Waves in Motion that lets you easily transform your database into any of a number of predefined chart styles, display your graphs the way you want them to look, and even publish them on the web.
iSurveys.com, for example, relies on oAzium Charts to provide online visual feedback to both administrators and the participants in the online surveys they host. "You certainly see information in a very different way when it's presented visually," says Dan Donaldson, head of the iSurveys development team. "We've been very pleased with the results and look forward to using this powerful and easy-to-use utility in other projects we're developing."
Gone are the days of complicated scripts, fiddly workarounds, and painfully slow rendering times. oAzium Charts does the job quickly, in three simple steps.
"For a long time FileMaker Pro users have wanted an easy and effective way to create and display charts within their database files." says Rich Coulombre, president of The Support Group. "With the new oAzium charting plug-in, we now have a great solution to offer our customers."
oAzium Charts supports the following types of graphs in a number of different configurations:
- -- Bar charts
- -- Pie charts
- -- Line graphs
- -- Scatter plots
- -- High-low charts
And oAzium Charts ships with a complete set of examples and documentation to help you add visual impact to your FileMaker databases. With oAzium Charts, you're free to try out different colors, fonts, and symbols. Define a grid, or add a background image for your important presentations. It's easy to experiment when it's the plug-in doing all of the work.
You can download a demo version of oAzium Charts or purchase single-user license right now for $99.00 US from the Waves In Motion website:
<http://www.wmotion.com/products.html>
Waves in Motion also offers special licenses to developers and sites who wish to use the oAzium Charts plug-in in their own FileMaker solutions. For all their products, Waves in Motion offers a demo version you can try before you make your purchase. The demo version of oAzium Charts offers all the functionality of the full version except that it operates for only one hour at a time.
With oAzium Charts for both Macintosh and Windows and on the web, FileMaker will never be the same again.
Waves in Motion is the developer of a growing collection of FileMaker solutions and plug-ins, including Script Scheduler, Simply Surveys--The Dragon, and the Analyzer. They are active members of the FileMaker Solution Alliance and the Apple Developer Program, and have been consulting and developing FileMaker solutions since 1990.
