The Bangkok Post is Thailand's leading English language daily. Every Wednesday it publishes a Database section which ends with a rather tongue in cheek (and quite funny) review of the weeks IT news from the region and around the world. Mostly Microsoft seems to suffer but two weeks ago the Bangkok Post Database noted that Apple was offering financing on iMac sales in the USA and posed the question:
"Thai users who might like to think different asked if this deal is coming to Thailand, and the answer is yes, immediately after the year's first snowfall."
Well this week they printed an article on the front page of the Database section saying that Apple were opening an office in Thailand and offering finance on iMac purchases and local versions of software!
This was a suprise as it never snows in Thailand.
The article also said Apple had found that 60 percent of iMac sales in Singapore were to Windows victims (they didn't use the term victims exactly ;-).
You can check out the Bangkok Post at <http://www.bangkokpost.net>. The web site is made with Macintosh.
On the subject of iMacs, the UK SOHO subscription magazine "Better Business" has a great little article about the iMac in its November issue. Titled "Try the new iMac" it must have been written by an Evangelist too modest to post it ;-) It briefly but eloquently puts the case for using the iMac for SOHO. Lines like "People use PCs. They have affairs with their Macs" and "...if you don't like PCs or were afraid to buy one, just sit down and try an iMac." must help the cause.
Better Business is at <http://www.better-business.co.uk> but I haven't checked site myself (email only these days, sad to say).

This tidbit is from:

I have been a Macintosh consultant for 7 years but a month ago we opened a small retail space in Huntsville, Ontario, Canada to better serve our clients. During the second week a couple in their 70s arrived at our door travelling from Montreal on their way to spend several months in the Yukon. They came in to look at the iMac and much to my surprise made the decision to buy one on the spot.
They spent the next 45 minutes completely unloading and repacking their Taurus Station wagon to make room for the computer and printer boxes. The only thing they couldn't get back into the car was the box containing their old Windows laptop. Finally they said "Keep it. See if you can get anything for it but don't worry about it. It never really worked too well anyway."

Retro Review: "Redjack"
By Kirk Hiner
"It's no secret that, because of the relatively small Mac gaming market, Mac titles tend to stick around well after their initial release. This can be both a blessing and curse, depending on the game. To help our readers pick between the good, the bad and the PC, Kirk Hiner reviews the titles that have long been forgotten by everyone except for the computer store stock boys."
"Redjack" was developed by CyberFlix, the same company that produced "Titanic: Adventure Out of Time." As good as that game was, "Redjack" is that much better. A slick combination of action and adventure--possibly the first time this has ever been pulled off with real success--the game pulls you into the story from the opening sequence and doesn't let go until the the credits have stopped rolling.

<mailto: "Media Toolbox (Shane R. Kerr)" toolbox@email.tc>
I'm looking to hire, on a part time or contract basis, someone who can handle the creation of CGI scripts and website development for my design company. Media Toolbox is a Graphic Design business situated on Queensland's Sunshine Coast in Australia. Media Toolbox started out originally doing Print Media services but have had so much interest in the designing of websites for clients that we feel a pressing need to selectively outsource ourselves in this area.
We use PowerMacs to host our clients websites but have had difficulty in finding people skilled in designing CGIs, scripts, databases and so-forth for the more complex tasks. Lots of Win 95 and NT guys around here, but Macintosh people are a little thin on the ground.
If you have experience (that you consider would satisfy the above requirements) in this area and are willing to negotiate part time contract work with us we would like to hear from you. Applicants can be from anywhere in the world, (working across the internet could make it the ultimate telecommuting job) but I'd be especially interested to hear from applicants in the South East Queensland area.

This announcement is from:
<mailto:joe@limit-point.com>
Mac developer Limit Point Software is shipping Boolean Search 2, a powerful upgrade to the Company's flagship product.
Boolean Search 2 is an industrial strength server-side search solution that offers lightning-fast access to information on web and file servers. This upgrade introduces a new class of search software, delivering a quantum performance leap and a robust new feature set which includes high-level search methods unique to Macintosh search engines.
Boolean Search 2, a complete code rewrite, was designed to be the must-have search engine for industry professionals - from intranet administrators to enterprise webmasters who market search capability as a value-add service. BS2 supports true multihoming for unlimited domains, Acrobat PDF and a bundle of unique context summaries and matching methods. The Site Index and Query Monitor, which tracks and displays user query details, help administrators intelligently construct Thesaurus and Stopwords dictionaries, or modify site content to promote targeted search results.
Boolean Search 2 is a learning tool -- exploring the concepts behind "intelligent search" and steering users through "search engineering" features which fine-tune the relevancy and precision of search results.
In December LPS will ship Blue Crab, an exciting companion module which allows Boolean Search 2 to crawl and index the web.
Fully-functional evaluation versions of Boolean Search 2 and PDF Decoder are available at:
<http://www.limit-point.com/BooleanSearch.html>
Boolean Search 2 is $247, PDF Decoder is $77.

I want to apologize to everyone for the sudden absence of EvangeList mail over the last day or two...and no, I can't blame it on the blackout the bay area suffered from this week. I am, however, seriously tempted to call it an offshoot of mercury going retrograde.
I should have the situation on my end straightened out by tomorrow (Thursday, 12/10/98). Thanks for your patience!
