This announcement is from:

Michael Sheets <mailto:"msheets@clanplaid.net">

The crowd that gathered at the center of town was larger than anyone
had expected, but they quieted down quickly as the mayor mounted the
steps to the podium. The huge garish plaid drape had covered the
structure all autumn since the construction started. Guards had been
posted day and night to keep the curious--young and old--from
sneaking a peek at the new building. The mayor began:

"My good friends, it gives me great pleasure to stand before you
today and unveil this wondrous new addition to our community."

The crowd cheered in anticipation.

"We have built this structure on a foundation that has withstood the
hordes of the Fallen time and time again. We have seen friends
perform great deeds, only to finally fall before the evil they once
thwarted. We have proven ourselves to be a beacon to which all may
flock to in times of need. Regardless of the much anticipated coming
of Soulblighter, we look towards the future with courage. I ask you
to lay aside your fears and worries for a short while and celebrate
our good fortune."

"For today, I bring you a place to meet new and old friends, share
stories, and learn of the successes and failures of our comrades.
From here you will gain strength to face the tough times ahead and
rally toward the future. My friends, I present our new TOWNHALL!"

As the drape fell with a loud swoosh, the magnificent building was
revealed and the crowd roared their approval. They pushed and shoved
to be the first into the new building but soon realized that the
structure was large enough to comfortably accommodate them all. It
was a glorious day!

Bob Cradock <mailto:cradock@ssc.wisc.edu>

As TidBits recently mentioned, <http://www.despair.com> is the URL
for a company that sells satirical "anti-motivational" materials.
Sick of Successories? Ready to cram your boss's Zig Ziglar books into
the shredder? Despair Inc., has posters celebrating mediocrity and
procrastination. I've got no connection with the company, but when I
saw one of their fictitious press releases, the evangelista in me
couldn't resist posting this. Nice to "need" their services again,
huh?

DESPAIR, INC. FOUNDER DR. E.L. KERSTEN CHALLENGES
STEVE JOBS TO "DEMOTIVATE(TM)" HIS MINIONS AT APPLE

DALLAS, TX - November 8, 1998 - With stock prices soaring, a
hot-selling new computer, and word of its return-from-death's brink
finally on the lips of someone other than Don Crabb, demoralization
is at an all time low within Apple Computer.

It is difficult to find a person within the entire company who isn't
glad to work there. Really glad. And this led Despair, Inc.'s founder
and COO Dr. E.L.Kersten to issue a challenge directly to Steve Jobs,
during a recent visit to Apple's headquarters.

Subject: ?? - Appletalk Too Chatty?

This request is from:

"Bruce R. Troen, M.D." <mailto:troen@auhs.edu>

We are moving to another institution which (surprise!) does not
support Macintosh computers. Indeed, until now, they have refused to
allow any connections to the institution's wide area ethernet unless
it was with an approved PC clone. This is amazing since half of the
research investigators have Macs! They have forced them to use modems
and phone lines. I have now forced the issue since 4 of the 8 us
making the move also have Macs.

Fortunately, I have received approval to connect our Macs. I do not
have much worry about internet access, since they apparently use DHCP
for IP address assignment. However, the IS person commented that
Apple Talk involved too much packet traffic, and he said that
Apple/Local Talk would not be allowed.

Is this really the case? I have previously heard about the "chatty
nature" of Apple Talk. But is there any documentation regarding this.
I would very much like to have a zone so that we can print and
transfer files.

Failing this, can we do this just via IP? I know that my LaserWriter
12/640 has some IP address capability, but can this work using DHCP
or does it need a fixed address? Furthermore, can we just use IP to
mount and share volumes? I remember seeing this feature, but don't
know if, in practice, this is practical.

I will be happy to summarize responses and post to the list. Thanks
for your help.

article on the"The Best of Design", top 10. The iMac is #3! The
article begings, "Thank you, God or Steve Jobs or whoever is
responsible, for the arrival of the iMac..."

And in a previous issue of Time, in examining of the Builders &
Titans of the century, Steve Jobs took a back seat to Bill Gates.
But, it is interesting that the entire issue is sprinkled with
pro-Apple remarks.

Let me reiterate: This stuff is a either a wonderfully accurate send
