This tidbit is from:

James Tolchard <mailto:kickass@ihug.co.nz>

This is a message inviting any Evangelist members who are interested
in Mac gaming to join the coolest discussion list on the net! The
Spinoff List originally spun-off from a discussion_list run by a
popular Mac shareware distributor (hence the name "Spinoff List").
However, with the original list now long-gone, the Spinoff List has
been struggling to get the word out. So if you're interested, please
visit the list's website, which is at:

<http://crash.ihug.co.nz/~kickass/spinoff>

The website contains all the information you will need, as well as an
online form for joining the list immediately.

Beware though, discussion can wander a bit off-topic at times, and is
not only restricted to Mac gaming. Topics typically cover anything to
do with the Mac, the Internet, and computers in general. Message load
averages between 300-500 messages per month.

Thanks for your support.

This tidbit is from:

Yuri Shukost <mailto:publ@spirit.com.au>

I've only caught two episodes of Pamela Lee Anderson's new TV show
"VIP", but apart from the the fact that it has enough sense not to
take itself seriously, the show seems to be a showground for Apple
gear.

In one episode was a flat panel display and what appeared to be a
desktop Mac used by the computer whiz, on the other was a 20th
Anniversary Mac on the female former assassin's desk.

So, if I'm asked, I'm only taping the show to carefully check out
which Macs are getting the sexy star treatment that week.

Some encouraging news! The following is an e-mail that I just got
from the guy at Apple responsible for their relationship with
PeopleSoft. They are still plugging away!

Hopefully the strength Apple is now showing will have some positive
influence on the PeopleSoft for Macs issue. If you get a chance,
thank and encourage both Apple and PeopleSoft as they continue to
work on this.

Ed O'Neal

Ed-

A belated update on where we stand with Apple and PeopleSoft. All of
this information is public. We continue to work with PeopleSoft on a
variety of fronts including the certification of their Java client
and various other solutions for accessing PeopleSoft from the Mac. We
know that this is a serious issue for many of our loyal customers. We
have made significant progress this year and look forward to
continued progress in cooperation with PeopleSoft.

Regards, XXX XXXXXX

Apple and PeopleSoft have a renewed interest in working together.
This began in earnest in April of this year when Apple and PeopleSoft
established an executive relationship. The relationship has continued
with joint activities at various venues including CAUSE, the premier
higher education technology show.

- -- An outcome of this executive relationship is that Apple's next
version of the Macintosh Java VM (Macintosh Runtime for Java 2.1)
will support the technologies that PeopleSoft needs for it's Java
client. This release is now scheduled for late January 99.

- -- Apple and PeopleSoft engineers have been working together to make
sure that PeopleSoft's Java client can be certified on MRJ 2.1.

- -- When we ship, PeopleSoft will test, and if we pass the test,
PeopleSoft will certify their Java client on MRJ 2.1. When this is
accomplished, it will provide access to PeopleSoft's web-enabled
functionality from the Mac.

- -- PeopleSoft has shown in it's booth at CAUSE the StudentServer
product from IBM. This product web-enables certain aspects of
PeopleSoft appropriate to higher education student self-service
interactions, and since it is browser based, runs equally well on
Macs as on PCs.

- -- PeopleSoft has also certified WebObjects (a web/Java development
environment from Apple) with certain versions of PeopleSoft, so this
is an option for extending the out of the box functionality of
PeopleSoft applications. It is also an avenue for developing
applications for web deployment that span multiple databases and/or
interact with PeopleSoft's enterprise suite.

- -- Citrix has been certified as a solution by PeopleSoft. There is a
Mac client for the Citrix server product today that works with
PeopleSoft.

- -- Many customers are using Virtual PC as a way to access the
PeopleSoft client from the Macintosh. As of now, PeopleSoft has not
announced any plans to certify VPC as a platform.

Hiawatha Bray, a Boston Globe columnist who in the past constantly
bashed Apple, seems to have been evangelized. In his column yesterday
he states: "I've already owned up to my most idiotic prediction of
the year, the inevitable failure of the Apple iMac. Some failure; I'm
using one of them right now."

This announcement is from:

<mailto:tg_webmast@directtodave.com>

Hi, I'm from a small Mac shareware company, TechnoGeeks Software.
Currently, we have only one 'real' product out, a puzzle game called
Overload. Although we released it several months ago, it's been hard
to get anyone to download it, and even harder to get registrations,
since no one's ever heard of us.

Anyway, Overload is a bomb-defusing game remotely similar to
Mastermind. It has original music, top-notch 2D graphics and, most
importantly, infinite replay value. Once you register, you get a
12-mission campaign, in addition to the included 'simulator' mode.

Thanks for supporting shareware and guerilla Mac programmers everywhere!

PR - Launch Strip 1.4

Launch Strip- An Inexpensive Yet Innovative File Launcher

San Diego, CA (January 6, 1999) - WestCode Software today announced the
release of Launch Strip, an innovative file launcher for the Macintosh.

Launch Strip can open applications, documents, URLs, disks, folders,
control panels, and desk accessories with a single mouse click.
Frequently-used items can be added and then quickly opened anytime by
clicking a button on the floating Launch Strip palette. Multiple Launch
Strips can be used to organize items into separate groupings (ie.,
projects, categories, etc.). Folder buttons can even be used to navigate
Open/Save dialog windows allowing users to quickly switch to different
folder location within an application.

"Launch Strip has been a part of OneClick, our popular Macintosh
enhancement product, for quite some time. We decided to spin off Launch
Strip as a separate product for users who wanted the option of using this
handy launcher without all of OneClick's other enhancements and macro
capabilities," said Mark Brooks, one of the developers of the Launch
Strip.

Unlike other file launching utilities that are stand alone programs,
Launch Strip is integrated into the Mac OS and can be accessed whenever
needed without having to switch to another program.

System Requirements

Launch Strip works on any Macintosh running System 7.1 or greater,
including Mac OS 8.5 and 8.5.1. Once installed, the product uses less
than 500K of hard drive space and when running uses less than 300K of RAM.

Availability

Launch Strip is available for purchase and immediate download from the
WestCode Software web site at <http://www.westcodesoft.com/launchstrip/>.
The introductory price is $9.98 and includes a 60 day money-back
satisfaction guarantee. Owners of OneClick will be able to download this
latest version of the Launch Strip free of charge beginning Friday,
January 8th, at <http://www.westcodesoft.com/components.html>

To learn more about Launch Strip, visit the WestCode Software web site at

Subject: Tidbit - Mac Saves PC Hard Drive

This tidbit is from:

David Denowh <mailto:denowh.david@mcleodusa.net>

Recently my brother had a problem with his PC. It was unable to boot
from the IDE hard drive. He booted from his special boot floppy to
try to recover the hard drive using scandisk. It just failed. He then
tried to clear off the drive with fdisk which got some kind of error
but seemed to have cleared it anyway. He then did the FORMAT C:/S
command which started to work but locked up with some cryptic error
after about half a second. It then just said something like "bad
media". I suggested that the drive must need a low level format and
we proceeded to find a way to do that. I searched the Internet and
found most of the advice went something like... "The hard drive is
formatted at the factory"... "If you have a bad block that requires a
low level format you may as well just buy a new drive"... or other
such nonsense. I am sure there is a utility out there somewhere that
will do this little chore but you would think that it would be easier
to find.

Anyway, we decided to have him ship the whole computer to me (we live
1000 miles apart) and I would take a crack at it. When I got it I
just removed the drive and installed it into my sons G3 All-In-One
Mac in place of his IDE hard drive. I booted from my MacOS 8.5 CD and
loaded Drive Setup. It found the drive and I selected low level
format from the options and in about a half an hour it was all fixed!

This request is from:

cballen <mailto:cballen@megsinet.com>

I would really appreciate any information the evangelist could offer
for dispatch software. I have been recently been assigned the issue
of computerizing the dispatch for a small trucking company 2-3
drivers/25 trailers. Currrently we use about 5 powermacs in our
company and I would like to order a few more. This would stop us from
having to go to the dark side. I am looking for mac native software,
I currently use Virtual PC for certain things but if the company
keeps having to use Winddows then they don't understand the
purchasing Macintosh's. Please forward info to:
