There is a new, large Macintosh faq at <http://www.mac-im-netz.de/macfaq.html> in german language. A large portion covers especially network questions, but there are also lots of other things adressed. Over the last months the number of answered questions went up to more than 70. All informations are kept strict actual and the links are checked regularly to avoid outdated contents.
The faq ist made private by me. I hope it helps the german speaking Mac community and shows how outstanding the Mac is suited for all kinds of networks. </x-flowed>

The new iMac ad has hit the shores of Japan! During a Saturday evening prime-time variety show broadcast in Tokyo (don't ask me the name - I get them all confused), the almost tinny piano of the Rolling Stones' "She's Like a Rainbow" started and a flurry of different-flavored iMacs seemed to waltz across the screen. It was great -- even better than hearing Jeff Goldblum explaining the simplicity of the iMac in Japanese (which, in an of itself, was pretty funny).
(I was told, however, that the flavored iMacs would not be available here for another month from a rather large retailer, Bic Camera, which is taking orders at 158,000 yen -- about $1,500 or so -- with the Bondi Blues now going for 118,000 yen -- about $1,100. Therein lies a debate in our household -- my wife prefers Tangerine, but should my tactics to hold out for a new Yosemite G3 fail, I think I'd prefer a Bondi Blue)
All of which is to say that next month's Macworld Tokyo can't come soon enough!

My company is primarily Windows 95/NT-based, with a whopping five Macs spread around the organization. Since I came on board in November, I've been spending time making sure they're working as best as possible, since none of our IS people know even the basics about Macs. (I'm sending two of my techs to a Mac training seminar in March.)
One weird problem that I haven't been able to fix involves Macs accessing our company intranet. The intranet web site is accessed by typing <http://ourcompany/> (no "www" and no ".edu"). All the PCs can connect to it fine, but the Mac browsers all try to add a "www" before the address and a ".com" afterward, which of course doesn't work.
If I type the IP address in the Mac browser, the web page loads just fine. Likewise, if I include the local domain (http://ourcompany.ourdomain.edu) the pages load fine. Unfortunately, every time a link is clicked that references a URL lacking the local domain, the page will fail to load again.
I've checked to be sure all the TCP/IP settings, including local domain, DNS servers (we have our own), etc. are set correctly. All the PCs are using Microsoft Networking, which the Macs can't use. Short of convincing our company webmasters to use relative links throughout the intranet (NOT likely), I can't think of a possible solution. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

I have just about exhausted my resources, not to mention patience and am in desperate need of help on a rather obscure problem.
I have a client that has just purchased an iMac classic to replace an aging 486 PC (score one more for the good guys!), which is used almost exclusively for dial-up access to a large local insurance provider. Their tech support is just about useless in anything related to Macintosh, however, and I am having trouble finding a solution.
The problems is that their host system requires TVI925 emulation from a dial-up connection. This is basically a TN3270 shell; however, their firewall does not support telnet connections--has to be by modem connection. The PCs use Procomm Plus 3.1 to do this with no problem. However, I am unable to find a comparable setup, especially that will recognize the iMac's internal modem.
I have found an item called Brown Term, used to connect to Queen's Library, Kingston, Canada. This is an older piece of software which uses the Apple Modem Tool to make the connection. However, when I try to connect, I get a constant chime, as if the BEL command is being issued on a local echo, which is really quite unacceptable. Any attempt to change the alert sound in the software locks up the system (8.5). It seems to be connecting OK, but the sound issue is a real problem. Lastly, the closest I can come to the iMac internal modem in the Apple Modem Tool configuration is Hayes Compatible--don't know if this is relevant or not.
I have also run across an item called MacToPic_Plus which is supposed to be able to emulate TVI925, but have not been able to get this to work.
Does anyone know of 1) an update to Brown Term (I have version 4.7.2, (c) 9/73) which works with OS 8.5, or 2) a plug-in to Zterm which emulates TVI925, or 3) another software package that will accomplish this? The client would prefer shareware, but commercial software is OK if necessary (MacToPic_Plus lists at $195, which is pricey for this client). If we can get this to work reliably, I will get to yank out 4 PCs and a UNIX dumb terminal, replacing all with iMacs. Let's win another one here!
Oh yes, I will gladly summarize results back to the EvangeList!
