Subject: Tidbit - Windows 2000 Alternatives, iMacs

This tidbit is from:

<mailto:rothl@wadsworth.org (Larry Roth)>

I was thumbing through the February 15 issue of PC WEEK the other day
when a column by Peter Coffee (PC at Work) caught my eye. Coffee was
discussing how Linux isn't the only alternative to Windows 2000,
a.k.a. NT 5.0. He points out that IBM's AS/400 systems are killer
servers for internet and intranet roles. What I found especially
interesting was this section:

"The Free-PC machines bear a striking resemblance in their general
configuration to the best-selling PC among people who have to spend
their own money for a system--that is, to the iMac (see story).
Reaching all those iMac owners, as e-commerce revenues grow faster
than all reasonable predictions, requires client-neutral
technologies--not the Windows-optimized content that Microsoft's
tools and platforms are designed to deliver."

The whole column is online at PC WEEK in Coffee's archives at:

<http://www.zdnet.com/pcweek/stories/columns/0,4351,389278,00.html>

under the title "Linux isn't IBM's only alternative to Windows 2000"

It's an interesting read and well worth a look.

Subject: Tidbit - More Macuarium

This tidbit is from:

Javier Rodriguez Romero <mailto:rodriguezja@grupocp.es>

I'm running a month-and-a-half old site dealing with Mac news and
rumor, in Spanish. We've been breaking news to our readers that not
even AtAT or the web edition of the main US-based media had (No, we
can't beat Mac OS Rumors, but we visit often ;-) ), and steadily
inching up our readership. Also we're trying to act as a catalyst of
Spanish online Macactivity, and just teamed up with an emailezine
called GASP (see link on our front page). However, I'm pretty sure
there's room for improvement in the site and in the spanish-speaking
Mac users' awareness of it.

So this is my message:

1- If you can write on Mac gaming, Linux-on-macs, Mac programming or
mac online communities, preferably in Spanish, contact us at
<mailto:macuarium@pagina.de> (emails to the header address will not
be answered). I'm not asking for job applications ;-), just a column
that could be regular; and I rather have Spanish-written material,
but we've already done an authorised translation for John Martellaro,
among others, and would be happy to do it again for a good piece of
Mac news or thinking. If you've had something published elsewhere
that you think is worth it,don't delay.

2- If you can read Spanish, go see Macuarium at
<http://welcome.to/macuarium>. Bookmark it. Then send comments... and
I don't mean just to me ;-), but to the people you think would enjoy
reading it as well.

Subject: $$ - VOODOO - Affordable Version Control

This special offer is from:

Christoph Reichenberger <mailto:chrei@unisoft.co.at>

We at UNI SOFTWARE PLUS are excited about the great feedback we got
on our version control tool VOODOO during MacWorld Expo San
Francisco. This mail is for all Evangelistas who were not able to
visit us at our booth but still want to get a high-quality version
control tool (VOODOO got the MacWorld/MacTech Eddy last year) at a
reasonable price.

Since VOODOO is so easy to use and works fine for files of arbitrary
type it is suitable not only for teams but also for single
programmers. The price of this special offer is suitable for single
programmers as well!

During February, all Evangelistas are eligible to get a copy of our
award-winning VOODOO at a very special price. Since we assume that
Evangelistas have access to the Internet and can download the
software themselves we based this special offer on the unboxed
version of VOODOO which saves you additional dollars. "Unboxed" means
that you download the application and full online documentation from
our server and just get a license key by fax or email.

Subject: Net.Dreams Introduces Remote Mail (Release)

This announcement is from:

Naomi Pearce <mailto:naomi@well.com>

Net.Dreams today announced the immediate availability of Remote Mail
1.0, providing for the first time access via any Macintosh Web server
to POP3 mail servers from any browser in the world. Now Mac OS Web
servers can provide a seamless bridge to any POP3 email system on the
Internet with an easy to use, customizable W*API-based plug-in.
End-users can read and process their email without any special
configuration or client software, simply by pointing their browser to
a Remote Mail-enabled Web page. Webmasters can use Remote Mail to
offer access exclusively to their own email system, or to any POP3
email system on the Internet. Available today, Remote Mail is priced
at $249, and can be downloaded at
<http://www.netdreams.com/remotemail/>.

Easy for Users, Secure for You Remote Mail 1.0 is easy to administer
and use. End-users simply enter their email address and password to
read and respond to their email from any browser that accepts
cookies. No special client software or session configuration is
needed. Administrators can completely change the look and feel of any
page generated by Remote Mail with basic HTML editing.

Administrators can limit the mail server accessed by a particular
Remote Mail-powered page to an organization's own email system.
Remote Mail can also be configured to access any POP3 mail system on
the Internet. Support for MIME attachments is integrated into Remote
Mail, along with wide support for 8-bit character sets.

Remote Mail was designed specifically to work well in a 'lab'
environment, where people briefly use public terminals to check their
email, then log off and leave. In developing Remote Mail, the
hightened security considerations of a 'lab' environment were
addressed, resulting in the inclusion of several features to prevent
spamming, unauthorized logins, session hijacking, and message
spoofing.

System Requirements Remote Mail can be used with WebSTAR, WebTEN and
Quid Pro Quo servers. Remote Mail requires the use of any W*API
1.2-compatible Web server running on a 68K, PPC or G3 Macintosh, and
works with any browser that accepts cookies to access any POP3 mail
server that supports the optional TOP command.

Pricing and Availability Remote Mail 1.0 is available immediately for
$249 from Net.Dreams' Web site at <http://www.netdreams.com/>. A
demonstration version of Remote Mail is also available at
<http://www.netdreams.com/remotemail/>.

Digital Guy Sez:

Folks, I just tried the demo, and this is a fairly slick idea -- it
has limitations, but it certainly is a serious alternative to going
IMAP. It sure beats lugging around copies of your mail database/files
on removables, or constantly copying them back and forth.

Subject: PR - WebSonarand Welcome Bundle

This announcement is from:

Duane Bemister <mailto:duane@wisdomquest.com>

For a limited time Virginia Systems is offering a new software bundle
with a special price for AppleShare IP version 6 owners. The bundle
includes two Mac only products, WebSonar and Welcome, that provide an
easy way to deploy and access documents on the web.

Virginia Systems, Inc.'s WebSonar was Apple's choice for Best
Business Solution at MacWorld San Francisco in January. WebSonar is a
powerful solution for the emerging web based document management
market. It is based on Virginia Systems' mainstream Sonar
Professional text retrieval and document imaging systems for the
Macintosh.

This mature technology enables companies, schools, and governments to
dynamically publish legacy documents, manuals, library book card
catalogs, databases and other archived materials by simply dropping
their existing files into a folder.

The text of these documents is completely searchable at over 12,500
pages per second. WebSonar supports Boolean, proximity, wild card,
phonetic, synonym, and quorum searching. Documents are converted to
HTML on-the-fly and all search phrases are highlighted for easy
recognition. Client editable, electronic "Post-It Notes" can be
attached to any page and documents found with a search can be
downloaded in their original format by simply clicking a Download
button.

Welcome is Andreas Pardeike's "Swiss Army knife" WSAPI compatible
plugin for web servers. It has three basic parts that can be used
together or separately:

1. Virtual Hosting enables servers to have multiple domains on a
single IP number
2. Statistics provide an overview of hits, visits and bytes that are
transferred for different sites
3. Rules modify incoming requests dynamically to both redirect them
and to deny access to specific parts of a site

The package, which has a retail value of $830.00 and includes a 5
concurrent Internet user license of WebSonar and a site license for
Welcome, is only $100 - a $730 savings. The offer is available until
June 30, 1999.

Information on the WebSonar/Welcome/AppleShare special is available
at <http://www.websonar.com/pressrelease.html>
