Larry Bottjen <mailto: Larry.Bottjen@msb.mat-su.k12.ak.us>

Recently, I decided to purchase an iMac and mentioned it in passing
to several staff members in my elementary school building where I
teach. I was surprised by the level of interest and decided to see
if I couldn't put together a small group purchase of iMacs for other
interested persons. I sent out flyers and email to several of the
schools in our district. Before you knew it, I had lots of folks
joining the consortium. Yesterday, I cut a great deal with our local
CompUSA store for 32 iMacs, 18 Epson 740 printers, 27 32Mb. ram
chips, 15 iMation USB drives, and 10 copies of Virtual PC. All in
all, the purchase amount was over 43K.

This sure has been a great year for Mac gaming, with all the new hot
releases that are due soon, we tend to forget about the smaller and
less funded gaming companies.

MacGamez.com (http://www.macgamez.com/) is proud to present the first
ever interview with Wesley David , from Digital Platoon
(http://www.digitalplatoon.com/) Project Leader, for their upcoming
game: Project V1.

Project V1 is 3D squad based tactical real-time action and simulation
game of the most elite and versatile small unit of special warfare:
the US Navy's Sea Air Land commandos (SEALs). Set in Vietnam, Project
V1 will feature real SEAL missions in realistic 3D environments such
as shrines, naval bases, jungles, villages, and more.

The game will be released for the PC, and most probably for the Mac
too. Project V1 is a fresh step forward from the other 3D shoot-em-up
games currently available or which will be available soon (Quake II,
Quake III, etc..).

The full interview is located at:

Subject: Tidbit - MacStores Debuts at Macnologist.com

This tidbit is from:

The Macnologist team <mailto:pr@macnologist.com>

The Macnologist website has the most complete source of Macintosh
specific Y2K information on the internet. And now the smart folks at
Macnologist have just come up with another great idea. MacStores.

http://www.macnologist.com/

Although currently still beta testing, MacStores is an on-line
database where you can list your Mac using Company, school, or
organization for others to find when they are feeling alone in the
Mac community. Other Mac users looking to support those companies who
made the right OS choice can go straight to the database to search
for a realtor, pet groomer, hotel or even college.

The powerful search features allow you to make your own Top Ten
MacStores list or put to rest that argument that you've had with your
WinTel using friend who says there are no companies using Macs.

If you're a programmer looking for beta test sites in your key
markets, there is an option for the listees to flag themselves as
being interested in beta testing new software, and how many machines
they can test on.

So hurry by and add all the stores you know to the new MacStores
resource before someone ads your store for you. We have the database,
we have the features, we just don't have any stores listed yet... :)

In what has become a rather large snafu, all of the EvangeListas who
replied to this offer the first time have been magically lost in the
ether(net?). It's a situation we apologize for and heads have
indeed rolled as a result.

Anyway, I would like to once again extend this offer to
EvangeListas... and if you replied once before with interest, please
let me know. We are prepared to make up for it in some way ;-) More
general information is available if you need it.

Here is the original post:

Subject: $$ - BBEdit 5.0 and T-Shirt

This special offer is from:

BBSW Sales <mailto:sales@barebones.com>

Hey Evangelistas! We've got a special offer for you on BBEdit 5.0!
For $79 plus shipping, we'll send you BBEdit 5.0 with a printed
manual *and* your choice of t-shirt. Not a bad deal considering the
regular price is $119.

What is BBEdit? OK, we'll be modest! It's the best tool available for
editing HTML and text on the Mac - it's a weapon that has a place in
any Macintosh maven's arsenal.

For BBEdit 5.0, we have re-written the HTML tools from the ground up;
they are now integrated into the core application and presented on a
new 'Markup' menu as well as via palette.

The new tools feature additions like a context-sensitive Tag Maker,
and its complement, the Edit Tag command. Together, these options
greatly speed the creation and editing of HTML documents by providing
markup options that are valid in the current working context.

There is also a new standards-based syntax checker, improved include
commands, and much more...in short, much more than we're able to list
here. If you would like more details, please check out our web site:

<http://web.barebones.com/products/bbedit/bbedit.html>

We'll include a complimentary BBEdit t-shirt for every Evangelista
who orders BBEdit at the discounted price of $79 (plus shipping) from
us directly either over the web, on our EVANGELISTAS ONLY special
order form, or over the phone at (781) 687-0700.

Online order form: <http://web.barebones.com/store/evang-form.html>

Don't forget to specify your choice of the classic 'It Doesn't Suck'
design or our brand new "SYA" shirt -- if you're curious, you can see
it at:

<http://web.barebones.com/store/shirts.html>

Evangelistas can also use the special form to order upgrades, at the
regular low price of $39 plus shipping. (Please do note that upgrades
don't include a t-shirt, but if you would like to order a shirt at
the same time as your upgrade, go for it!)

As always, we appreciate your support!

Subject: !! - New Zealand Internal Revenue Department Not Supporting Macs?

This action item is from:

An EvangeLista Who Wishes to Remain Anonymous

Last week New Zealand's tax department, the Internal Revenue
Department (IRD) announced that, due to 'unforeseen' problems, its
new electronic payroll tax filing system, scheduled to go live 1
April, would not support Macintosh computers. Mac users would need
to seek a temporary exemption to the electronic filing requirement
and "switch to PCs" (NZ Herald, 12 March, p C3). This despite the
fact that Mac support had been originally specified in the project.

The reason for this 'unforeseen circumstance' was that contractor EDS
had not discovered until the project was in its final stages that the
chosen Microsoft server platform, utilising Secure Socket Layer 3.0,
would not support Macs. Evidently EDS "relied on Microsoft product
documentation" that Internet Explorer supported a full implementation
of SSL 3.0 in developing a solution. Microsoft New Zealand's General
Manager was quoted as saying that "the documentation is reasonably
sufficient", what EDS is seeking to implement is "...more complex
than using the standard capabilities of the product set", and that
"...it's a business decision for the IRD what capabilities it wants
to build into the system".

No announcement has been made as to how, if or when Mac support will
be added. One presumes that unless loud and urgent pressure is
brought to bear against such arrogance, such support will never
eventuate and yet one more reason for expelling Macs in favour of
Microsoft's near monopoly will remain. Given that New Zealand's
'deregulated' economy and tax system are often seen as an
experimental model for such reforms elsewhere, concern about such an
outcome should also be widely felt.

Might I suggest that anyone concerned contact:

Rt. Hon. Jenny Shipley, Prime Minister
<mailto:prime.minister@ministers.govt.nz>
Rt. Hon. Helen Clark, Leader of the Opposition
<mailto:jane.leicester@parliament.govt.nz>
Hon. Peter Dunne MP, Chairperson of Parliament's Taxation &
Expenditure Review Committee
<mailto:united.nz@parliament.govt.nz>
Warren Kyd MP, Chairperson of Parliament's Commerce Committee
<mailto:faith.sarten@parliament.govt.nz>
Rt. Hon. Winston Peter, Leader NZ First Party
<mailto:sarah.neems@parliament.govt.nz>
Graham Holland, Commissioner of Inland Revenue
<mailto:commissioner@ird.govt.nz>

New Zealand readers should also email their own Member of Parliament.

Digital Guy Sez:

I think I would like to see a followup on this...for one thing, what
the HECK is this "General Manager" person talking about? I would like
to think that I share a common language with New Zealand, yet it made
absolutely no sense.

Anyone have an idea of what's going on? Another EvangeLista sent the
following URL:

<https://irfile.ird.govt.nz/irdreg/help_mac_statement.asp>

"Basically, it means Mac-based businesses must buy a PC. The
exemption mentioned is only for one year. They argue that it isn't
possible to engage in a secure Internet transaction with a Macintosh,
which I believe is a load of rubbish. Can you please offer NZ Mac
users (and Apple NZ) some assistance?"

Oh, and anyone choosing to write these people should remember: These
are government officials, and respecting their positions will go a
lot further than lambasting them. Some of them may not even have a
clue that this is even an issue. Be nice.

'Nuff said.

Subject: $$-Special Offer SystemSentry reposting

For some strange reason, the previous offer was cut off. Here's the
complete posting with the special offer.

Guy

This special offer is from:

Steve Becker,<steve@macease.com>

I'm pleased to announce a special offer to EvangeListas for SystemSentry.

Many times when your Mac crashes it's due to a problem with your machine
handling its memory resources, and many of these crashes come with a
dialog box that presents a difficult-to-interpret error code. At least
some memory-related problems are directly attributable to a bug in a
specific program, while others may be due to a problem with your
operating system, your hardware, or fragmented memory. Since your
computer uses its memory resources in a dynamic way, effectively tracking
its memory usage requires a dynamic approach.

SystemSentry provides you with an easy way to dynamically monitor the
memory requirements of your computer -- even when it's not displayed on
your Desktop! The benefits of this include helping you determine which
activities lead to memory-related problems, helping you increase the
stability of your machine's configuration, helping you determine which
programs have a bug which causes them to not return memory to your
computer when you quit them, letting you know which combination of
programs you can safely run simultaneously on your computer, and showing
you whether you really need to install more RAM. Besides, I think it's
pretty cool to be able to dynamically observe how a computer is using its
memory resources!

SystemSentry:

1. Doesn't require launching a separate application.

2. Doesn't require any technical knowledge about your computer.

3. Doesn't require learning a bunch of keyboard commands.

4. Doesn't get in your way when using your computer.

SystemSentry:

1. Gives you the choice of a Pie Gauge or a text-based display.

2. Gives you the option of placing it anywhere you choose on your Desktop.

3. Gives you the option of hiding/showing its display with a click of the
Mouse or a keyboard shortcut.

4. Gives you an Auto-Alert option which works even when SystemSentry is
not visible -- after all, it needs to live up to its name!

5. Gives you a built-in Help system that describes the function of each
button (they are really pretty self-descriptive, though) and provides
built-in tips on using SystemSentry.

6. Gives you a quick visual prompt as to what is going on by dynamically
updating the color of the display to reflect the amount of memory being
used on your system.

7. Automatically adjusts itself when you use Virtual Memory or RAM
Doubler.

8. Automatically adjusts itself when you change the amount of RAM
installed on your computer.

Information about the additional features included in SystemSentry --
along with screen snapshots -- may be found at
<http://www.kagi.com/MacEase>.

REQUIREMENTS

A Macintosh computer with System 7.0 or later and a 68020 or later
processor. SystemSentry is compatible with OS 8.5x, and my web site has
detailed information regarding the compatibility of all my utilities with
OS 8.5x.

SPECIAL PRICE

While the regular registration fee is only $19., for the next three weeks
I'm offering EvangeList readers an even lower, special price of $17.

SystemSentry includes a 30-day money back satisfaction guarantee. To
receive the special price, please be sure to use the
<http://order.kagi.com/?L8T2> URL.

A free, fully-functional demonstration version of SystemSentry may be
downloaded at
<http://www.kagi.com/MacEase>.

Technical support may be obtained by emailing me at the following

MacVision (http://www.themacvis.com/) is a new site that features
macintosh news, views and reviews. We intend to focus on shareware
reviews, for our reviews department. We're very small (5 people) and
need as much help as we can get. We need people to find recent
shareware and to write reviews. We also need people to rant in our
