You may just need to update the driver on your external hard drive. While 8.5 updates the driver on your main system it leaves the externals alone. I haven't been running 8.5 long enough to know though. I do know that FWB suggests that you be running 2.52 if you are using Norton 4 and Norton recommends that you immediately upgrade to 4.01 if you are using FWB drivers. You are better of running the Apple drivers if your drive is supported.
You can use the Apple disk tools to just update the driver without formatting but you best have a backup just in case.
