Hey guys,
I was just wondering about some stuff...

I have been upgrading a used 7500 we inherited from 7.5.1 thru to 8.5.1 and have observed some incredible OS bloating in the amount of RAM the OS takes. Originally on booting, system 7.5.1 consumed approximately 7.5 Megs of RAM. This went up to about 8.9 in system 8. These numbers are with all extensions loaded (including speech recognition, QD3D, file sharing and appletalk ON, desktop printing on, no VM etc.) With 8.5, this number jumped to 19.2 megs!

Incidentally, the OS also went up in HD space from 75Megs to over 133 megs without any significant additions, and WITH paring out some of the stuff like OLE (since I don't have MS Office or IE on this machine) and a bunch of inits and extensions the previous owner used that we won't be using.

This kind of jump from 8.0 to 8.5 seems a little hard to explain by the usual optimization of code argument.

Just wondering,
Wintermute
