Well, this may sound a bit harsh, but here's what I would do: Buy MacOS 9. It's definitely worth it. It's FAR more stable than any of the post-7.1 versions of the Mac operating system. I crash so rarely it's a remarkable thing, and I'm always using beta quality software. Another option is to get OS 8 or 8.5 from somebody who's already upgraded to 9.0. Check the liscence agreement to make sure that's ok (I don't recall reading any non-transferrence of ownership upon upgrade clauses, but I'm not exactly a lawyer). The difference between OS 8.5 and 9.0 in stability is minimal but, in my case, noticeable. Still it's vastly superior to 7.5.x in almost every way. If you're a student you can get the OS upgrades for cheap, too.

I know this isn't exactly the answer you were hoping for, but it's the best possible solution that I can see to making your machine as usable as possible.
