<<I have had my ASCEND router for a while now and am looking forward to the increase Web speed along with TCPIP access via the Telefinder Server.>>

Exactly what does the Ascend router do? I'm looking towards my next move (to Knoxville) in 2.5 years. At that time I plan to get a REAL connection to the net (hopefully there will be something in the T1 class available for $100 a month or less). I would like to get some sort of system this year which will allow me to connect my Mac and PC together, and use the net from either of them. Is this what the Ascend Router does? Thanks for any info. I'm glad we have a "resident expert" at these things right here at headgap!

I didn't really realize it, but I've been using TF User 5.2b5 for ages. Probably since I left Memphis. I just downloaded the newest version you had in the files area. I'm hoping it will increase the speed of my file transfers, etc.

Speaking of which....

Has anybody else used Headgap over the net very extensively?

I have been using it over the net exclusively for the past 6-7 months, and it's been, um, mediocre performance at best. What kind of performance do you generally get? Reading and sending messages isn't too big a deal, but file transfers are a pain! I'm generally getting 750bps - 1300bps transfers, regardless of the time of day. I don't know if this is due to net lag and latency or a lack of synchronization between the modems over the net or what. I would have expected a 20% drop in performance (assumint nobody else is on the system), but this is closer to a 65% drop in performance (I used to get 3500bps transfers over direct dial modem).

The reason this is particularly weird is that TF claims it has one of the fastest web servers available. I find it hard to believe the web server is very quick when even their proprietary system is dog slow. I've not uploaded a single file (well, maybe one) in the past 6 months because of this. I've only downloaded a couple.

Op, I'm looking to get more involved in the BBS (as far as daily usage) again. I don't know exactly what I can do to help, but if you would like to test tweak the system and get my input on how it affects performance, I'm more than willing to help out. Also, I can't wait until you get ISDN. That, I would hope, should increase performance immensely.

Later,
Jason (aka Wintermute)
