I don't know how many of you have heard of the Hong Kong or Auto-Start Virus. One thing that you should be aware of is that it is RAMPANT and it does cause problems. Had your machine restart on its on lately?? You got it! Ever stick a Mac Addict CD in the drive. The November? issue had the virus on it. THIS IS A POWERPC Virus. It will not effect 68k Macs, but you probably can be a carrier for it.
Just so you'll know I run Worm Gobbler 1.1 (PPC Only) weekly on the Headgap and I have never had it. I have however had it on my second machine and have also had it at work on our network (we got it from a zip disk from the orient). It reappears occasionally on our network since we use so many optical disks and zip disks. (Yes any disk can be a carrier!).
How do you detect the virus? One way is to do an option find file and search for DELD. If you come up with a hit on this search, then you have it. What do you do about it? Download Worm Gobbler v1.1 from the Mac UD area in the Virus folders and run the program.
If you have a CD Player hooked to your system and you haven't already open up your Quicktime Settings Control Panel and turn off BOTH AutoPlay selections. That is one way it replicates itself and you don't need these on anyway. You player will still work, you will just be the one to start it instead of the virus starting it.
I would recommend that ALL MAC users download Worm Gobbler 1.1 from the Mac UD area and use it regularly, unless you are running SAM with the November 98 Update or the new NAV. I expect all of you who upload frequently to do this to prevent further spread.
