1. A Marriage of Artistry and Technology

Their studio may be housed in a converted water-powered mill over
120 years old. And they may be nestled in a sleepy Connecticut town
of just 700. But Bill and Marleen Cafarelli's business--Video Art
Works--resides on the cutting edge, and customers have been beating
a path to their door.

What's bringing so many eager customers to Video Art Works?

The Cafarellis use Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express, and, the
linchpin of their technical artistry, DVD Studio Pro to create
award-winning wedding DVDs offering quality that "rivals anything
Hollywood can do."

"Our clients' mouths are dropping when they see what we can do with
DVD Studio Pro," exults Marleen Cafarelli.

2. Don't Bother Me, I'm Browsing

Click on its Browse button, and iTunes organizes your music library
by Artist and Album, making it easier to find just the right tunes.
(Another click hides the Browser again.)

Say you're in the mood for some Coltrane. Scroll down the Artist
column, click on John Coltrane, and iTunes will display just the
Coltrane in your collection. Each album on which he appears will be
listed in the Album column, and only the songs on those albums will
appear in the song list window below.

But say you'd like to see everything by both Coltrane and Ray Brown?
After clicking on John Coltrane, scroll down the Artist column, then
hold down the Command key and click Ray Brown. iTunes will display
all of the albums and songs by both Coltrane and Brown.

One more browsing tip: iTunes also lets you browse by genre. To add
a Genre column to the browser, choose Preferences from the iTunes
menu and click the box next to "Show genre when browsing."

3. Tips for Ten: Creating New Folders Easily

How many ways can you create a new folder in Mac OS X?

1. Choose New Folder from the File menu.
2. Type Command-Shift-N.
3. Choose Customize Toolbar from the View menu and add a
New Folder icon to your toolbar that you can click anytime
you want to add a new folder.

And here's one of Scott Kelby's favorite tips from his book,
"Mac OS X Killer Tips": "Just Control-click on an empty space in any
Finder window, and then choose New Folder from the pop-up menu."

What else can you do by control-clicking? Open a Finder window and
give it a try.

4. Keeping Your Speaker Notes Handy

When giving a presentation, wouldn't it be great if your audience
could watch your presentation play on the big screen without seeing
the speaker notes (and all of the talking points) that you're seeing
on your Mac's main display?

Here's how easy that is to accomplish in Keynote:

1. Choose Preferences from the Keynote menu.
2. Select the radio button to "Present on primary display."
3. Check the box next to "Use alternate display to view slide
notes," and close the Preferences dialog.

When you click Play, Keynote will display your slides in
Presentation mode on one display or large screen while, unseen by
your audience, your slides and speaker notes appear on the second
monitor.

Like more Keynote tips? If you're using Keynote, you already have an
entire presentation of them. Choose Open Samples from the File menu,
and double-click on "Presentation Tips.key."

6. .Mac Lets You Share with Friends Using Windows XP

If you have friends or colleagues using Windows XP (or if you use
Windows occasionally yourself), a new utility available to .Mac
members greatly simplifies file sharing.

Send your friends to the .Mac website, where they can download the
new iDisk Utility for Windows XP. Once they've installed the free
utility, they'll be able to access your iDisk Public Folder,
retrieve files from it, and place files in it for you. A great way
to distribute documents too large for email (like a PowerPoint
presentation, FileMaker database, or Photoshop file), it's also a
convenient way to exchange resumes.

the .Mac website:

6. Technically Speaking

Like to keep track of time?

Mac OS X gives you the option of displaying the time in the menu
bar. (A click reveals the date.) It comes with a Clock application
that lets you place an analog or digital timepiece in the Dock or
on your desktop.

If you prefer to use military time or you'd like to display dates
and times that adhere to standards appropriate to other regions
around the world, Mac OS X also accommodates.

Read "Mac OS X: How to Display the Day and Time" for details.

7. What's New?

system administrators, QuickTime developers, and web managers who
attend the Worldwide Developers Conference in May will learn where
Apple's knack for developing innovative technology solutions will
take tnem next.

Like to control iTunes, Keynote, iPhoto, and other applications
from your Sony Ericsson mobile phone? Thanks to Bluetooth and
AppleScript, it's as easy as point and click:

We've just released Mac OS X Server Update 10.2.4. You'll find
detailed information in the Knowledge Base article "About the Mac OS

While you're waiting for the movie to arrive on DVD, why not mix it
up with Malfoy and you-know-who, learn a few new spells, and enjoy a
rousing game or two of Quidditch right on your Mac with Aspyr
Media's new game, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets"?
