Version 2.0 of "Macintosh C - A Hobbyist's Guide to Programming the
Mac OS in C" includes a 950-page book and a collection of demo
programs written with Metrowerks CodeWarrior Pro 3. Version 2.0 is
completely rewritten, bringing it up to date with Mac OS 8.1 and

YAAF 1.0a3 from PandaWave is a freeware C++ framework for developing
cross-platform applications. It is designed to allow the easy
development of cross-platform applications for the Mac OS, Windows,
and X Windows platforms. Written in C++, YAAF provides a basic core
framework for working with windows, views, menus, and controls in a
portable fashion.

MacZoop 1.8.5 from Graham Cox is a free C++ application framework for
Mac OS. Easy enough for beginners to learn, MacZoop has sufficient
power to be useful for small- to medium-sized projects. This update
fixes a number of minor bugs in the framework and introduces a couple
of new features.

PANTONE ColorReady is a three-in-one software application that expands
the color-management capabilities of QuarkXPress, Adobe Illustrator,

The Web Standards Project (WSP) is a newly formed international
coalition of leading web developers dedicated to promoting a worldwide
standard for web and browser design. WSP is urging browser makers to

[12] Apple's iMac Faster Than Fastest PC

Apple's new iMac computer is 40 percent faster than the fastest PC,
and its processor is more than twice as fast as processors in
comparable consumer PCs, based on BYTEmark testing. A customer would
have to pay almost twice as much for a Pentium II-based PC.

[14] Third-Party Hardware: Sonnet Technologies

Sonnet Technologies has introduced two new models in its line of
Crescendo G3 processor upgrade cards for PCI-compatible Power
Macintosh computers. The upgrades, based on the latest PowerPC G3
processor technology, set new price-performance standards for high-end
processor upgrades. The 333-MHz and 360-MHz models produce impressive
MacBench processor scores of 1150 and 1300, respectively -- up to 722
percent faster than the original system.

[15] Retailers Experience Record Consumer Demand for iMac

Reports from Apple's retail channel indicate record consumer demand
for the iMac computer, which hit retail store shelves on Saturday,
August 15. Many retailers reported complete sell-outs, and many took
orders for iMac computers scheduled for delivery this weekend and
beyond.

"iMac has been the biggest computer launch we've seen in our history,"
said Jim Halpin, CompUSA president and CEO. "Apple is back, and iMacs
are flying off CompUSA store shelves across the United States."

"It's Christmas in August!" said Paul Ramirez, vice president of
marketing for ComputerWare. "ComputerWare sold more iMacs on Saturday
than all desktop PCs combined in the month of July."

[20] New FileMaker Plug-ins: Web Broadcasting, Amsys, Waves of
Motion, Pointy Bird Developments

Web Broadcasting's WEB-FM 4.0v3 for FileMaker Pro 3.0/4.0 is a plug-in
that creates a web browser interface to FileMaker Pro databases. It
works with popular web servers such as WebSTAR, Quid Pro Quo, WebTEN,
and AppleShare IP. Version 4.0v2 added W*API 1.3 Virtual Domain
support. WEB-FM 4.0v3 includes additional improvements, making it the
most feature-rich and stable version of WEB-FM released to date.

The Schedule-it plug-in for FileMaker Pro 4 from Amsys enables
FileMaker to execute scripts at a specific time or trigger them when a
condition specified in a calculation occurs. You can schedule up to 99
scripts. Version 1.5 beta of Schedule-it includes a new advanced
scheduling function.
