Oracle Corp. is adding support and integration for Apple's rich media technologies in Oracle8i. This improved integration is made possible by Oracle interMedia, which now includes support for Apple APIs; QuickTime; QuickTime Streaming Server; and Sherlock 2, Apple's internet search detective.
"The coolest content on the Internet is created using QuickTime and the most powerful e-businesses run on Oracle8i,'' said Jeremy Burton, vice president of Internet platform marketing, Oracle Corporation, in a press release. "Our support of QuickTime and other leading Apple technologies will help enterprises and content providers make even more productive use of their rich QuickTime content.''
Content creators, application developers and corporations whose Web sites are rich in QuickTime content now have direct access to the features of Oracle8i to reliably manage and deploy media content on the Web. Oracle interMedia lets users search, manage and deploy the image, audio, video, location, text and document content essential to electronic commerce, Web publishing and corporate intranet applications. Mac and Windows can run interMedia utilities natively on their machines, making it easy to store all popular Web content in Oracle8i.
By adding support for QuickTime, interMedia gives the content developers access to Oracle8i and the ability to use tools which they are already familiar. In addition, Sherlock 2, Apple's internet search detective and personal shopper feature in Mac OS 9, can be used to quickly search vast repositories of content stored in Oracle8i through its integration with interMedia. Also, because the content is in Oracle8i, departmental and enterprise wide access is built-in.
Oracle interMedia supports the QuickTime Streaming Server. Using Oracle interMedia plug-in for the QuickTime Streaming Server, interMedia can store QuickTime media directly in Oracle8i and stream to either a Mac or Windows client using the QuickTime Streaming Server. Oracle8i interMedia support for the Macintosh platform also includes:
"Drag and Drop'' support to store and access media content from an Apple client into a remote Oracle8i database. The interMedia Annotator utility can automatically extract application metadata and insert into fixed schema, or perform XML encoding and insert as text strings.
Oracle interMedia client APIs now run on Mac OS 9. Any Java based client on the Mac platform can now use interMedia client APIs to interact with content stored in Oracle8i.
interMedia now has a plug-in for Apple's Sherlock search utility, providing transparent access to Oracle8i databases from Macintosh clients. Sherlock users can perform powerful searches on Oracle8i using interMedia1s indexing and retrieval capabilities, in a manner completely transparent to the user.
A beta version of these new capabilities will be available via download from the Oracle Technology Network, Oracle's developer site in December.
