Planned Investments (reported in the November issue of CA magazine)
Macintosh computers are now the number-one category commanding investment dollars from the creative community.
One of the benefactors of this increased demand for computers is the color monitor market. Planned purchases of monitors 21" or larger almost doubled to 19% compared to 10% in our last survey.
Although storage was the second most significant planned investment for creatives (44% of all respondents indicated an intent to purchase), interest in storage technology has declined 7% overall from the last survey.
Desktop color printers are the number-one planned investment for commercial illustrators and photographers. Though softening a bit, color printers still rank as the number-three planned investment for designers and number five for advertising agencies.
Desktop publishing software is ranked fourth in investments for all creatives and approaching an all-time high for this category. Illustrators' interest has been increasing over the last three surveys, further supporting their move into the design field.
The market for stock photo image collections offered in CD-ROM is topping out. Many creatives have now developed libraries of CDs of royalty-free and low-royalty images and are not as compelled to purchase new collections. Higher-priced online stock images are increasing in popularity and we expect this to continue as stock agencies refine their business model to offer more online services for professional creatives.
Interest in Web page creation software is increasing again and now at 25% for all creatives. More than one-third (36%) of mid-sized agencies, 38% of design firms with 20 or more creatives and 15% of photographers plan to buy Web page creation software. This data gives us a glimpse of who will be moving into Web design and production next year.
Survey participants were asked to list planned capital investments for their firm in the next twelve months.
