Glenn,
One thing people don't think about much is a null modem. They're about the same speed as appletalk, and you have to use terminal software like Zterm, but it's usually pretty effective, even across platforms. The hard part is finding the right cable. What you're looking for is a serial-to-serial "null modem" cable. I haven't looked, but I'd imagine you could buy one at MacWarehouse, etc.

Incidentally, I wasn't aware that Apple II's could use Appletalk with Macs. I would think this would be the best way, depending on how hard it is to setup.
