Hey Bill,
You probably just didn't get the connector that goes to the side-panel fully seated. I installed extra RAM in my iMac when I got the thing last May and didn't have any problem. However, I did notice how difficult it was to get those connectors reconnected when you're putting it all together. I'd suggest (if you haven't already done so or gotten the thing fixed by now) taking it apart again and just reseating all those little connections. Then of course make sure the USB devices are hooked into the side of the iMac properly as well. I've found some USB devices are a rather "tight fit" while others are almost "too loose". If you know what I mean.
