Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Test SpiderJose: Hi Bob! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Good Morning everyone! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Grabbing a bite of lunch you'll have to excuse me a few Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I have been run TF server 5.5b10, I thought it wasn't as stable but realized after a few type 25 errors that I needed to assign a bit more ram. SpiderChris: hi bob Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Hello! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: One thing that might be of help is if you were to give us a bit of guidance on how much ram to assign. SpiderChris: yea, 25 is an out of memory condition... unfortunately by that point (when the 25 is generated), it's within the system and too late. (probably quicktime trying to do something important). rusty: lots? :) rusty: I posted a formula, but it should put in in the s/w somewhere too rusty: maybe the about screen... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Yep. I moved it up to 9 meg. I have more but like to leave a few free if I want to boot Netscape. I want to compliment you on the web bbs docs they are excellent. Even I can understand them. rusty: cool rusty: haveyou checked out the demo version? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Is it up now?? I havent looked since yesterday or did I miss it somewhere?? rusty: it was put up yesterday, but I have not posted an announcement yet Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I ll pull it down then. Have a bit of time today and will be doing some more work on the system tomorrow. Really enjoying the web side it is like having a whole new bbs to set up . Lots of things you can do. rusty: There's also a link to it on the web site SpiderJose: Hi Bob W. Bob Wright: Greetings to all! SpiderChris: hi Bob W Bob Wright: How ya been, chris? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I have a link on my web site as well. I spent sometime making Icons for the other filetypes I have. Take a look if you get a minute. headgap.com you know. Hey Bob Wright! Bob Wright: Bob N! Bob Wright: I see chris rides his bike to work ;) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: It is nifty that you can just add the 3 letter designator and have it pull up your icon. Quite a feature that I discovered by accident. SpiderChris: only when my car isn't working ;-) Brian (Wang's): Hey. rusty: Bob, can you send me 16x16 icons for the Commodre and Amiga files? SpiderJose: Hi Brian! rusty: I'd like to put them in the distribution. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: would be very happy to. I made up originally 32x32 and have already sent them to the system. They do slow down the page drawing though and I will be happy to convert them. Email attach okay in sit? Brian (Wang's): I still have an Amiga at home so if there are any special icons I can do just email me brian.akey@wangs.com. rusty: I'm going to experiment with a non-tables dir listing too. rusty: The tables make it very slow to draw a dir page. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I think it would be a good option for those with slow net connects. rusty: with the tables, all the text needs to load before it displays the page. Brian (Wang's): Doing html I try to test it with lynx to see how it looks worst case. rusty: some of our pages are over 100k with the descriptions Brian (Wang's): Some of the early mac web browsers used to blow up with anything over 64k. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: We are using my 32x32 icons though. The 16x16 would cut that down so. That and shorter directorys rusty: we get a few lynx hits, but I don't consider it in designing our pages Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I really don't either. AOL is as far down as I think anyone needs to go. rusty: the main problem I've seen with AOL is that it does not do GIF animation properly Brian (Wang's): With lynx you can see if your gifs have the alt text. rusty: I think that MS Explorer versions have had a problem with that too Brian (Wang's): Has anyone used the clip to gif addon for lasso? I want to get it working. rusty: it didnt work for me rusty: its on our BBS i think Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I haven't played with explorer much but I don't use a lot of animations. The way you handled the animations using your banner with spml is unique. Does that work on the older versions of Xplorer? Bob Wright: camera goes THUD ;) rusty: do you mean the random banners? rusty: that works with any browser Tom Servo: I not sure if I'm doing this right. But I'll give it a try. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Exactly thats what I thought. Not a bad solution and spices up the page. Brian (Wang's): What is best for cgi, applescript? rusty: the GIF that is a problem for some browser is the animated 4 star icon form the MacWorld review Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Greetings Tom Servo. rusty: I think AOL runs it, then leaves the 1 star part showing! rusty: that really sucked rusty: I'd use Frontier before apple script rusty: and C++ if you need a fast CGI Brian (Wang's): Frontier looks cool but how fast is it? rusty: it is much faster than apple script Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Brian, I guess you are going to have to learn how to use frontier and tell me. rusty: I'll put some samples online Tom Servo: I am writting a program that runs under Windows and spawns TeleFinder User. When TeleFinder launchs it displays a dialog stating that it cannot find MDMSETUP.DAT. I 'm specifing the correct working directory in ShellExecute() and I am even changing the directory before I spawn. What is going wrong? Brian (Wang's): Is apple ever going to come out with PPC applescript? rusty: The working directory needs to be TF's directory rusty: oh, i'm not suret why that doesn;'t work rusty: something is changing the dir that TF gets. rusty: are you in w 95 or 3.11? Brian (Wang's): I have run tf off the NT server and I have to give r/w premissions for it to see MDMSETUP.DAT. rusty: make sure that the working dir is correct in the TF Properties Bob Wright: For two years I have run TF on a PPC6100; Within the week I will be moving it to a PPC8550. Does anyone have any precautions I need to consider? rusty: I mean the program group settings Brian (Wang's): I have a few people they have multi-configs on the PC side and I have made some batch files that copy the correct .ini file to tfuser.ini. Is there an other way? Bob Wright: exclude cross fingers ;) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Your nubus cards won't work on it :-) Bob Wright: Its ok about the nubus, I have an external Hurdler :) Tom Servo: I am running Win95. But this program must run on NT, 3.11, and 95. rusty: If you use the shell launch, then program manager opens it and sets the workgin dir to the one set in the program group settings. Tom Servo: Do you think a shortcut in the directory with TFUSER would help? SpiderJose: The 8550 should be ok, just make sure you have 7.5.5 and the PPC interupt Extension Bob Wright: Jose: ok...thanks! Brian (Wang's): I've seen some new term programs that run over the web. One of them is a java app. It would be cool to have tfclient in java because then I could run it on linux. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Jose, does that Interrupt extention stop some of the odd freezes. I haven't heard much about it but have it. rusty: do you have a progman item for tfuser? Brian (Wang's): Is anyone using OT1.1.2? Does it work well? Tom Servo: no. rusty: we're going to install it on our server today Bob Wright: is the interupt extension packaged with 7.5.5? SpiderJose: Bob, Yes it does. Bob Wright: great :) Brian (Wang's): what? interupt extension? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I think he was answering me. It is available of AMUG in the Apple folder SpiderJose: The PPC Interupt Extension doesn't come w/ 7.5.5 however it is on our BBS SpiderJose: PUBLIC FILES:MAC:SYSTEM Brian (Wang's): What does it do? rusty: htttp:www/spiderisland.com/pulic%20files/mac/system/ Bob Wright: ok Chas.: late greetings... rusty: htttp:www.spiderisland.com/pulic%20files/mac/system/ rusty: http:www.spiderisland.com/pulic%20files/mac/system/ rusty: who taught me to type anyway? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: It keeps you from having those random freezeups? rusty: yes Bob Wright: version 1.0 for the interupt is the latest? Bob Wright: that is the version I have now Bob Wright: once I get the 8550, I will FINALLY see what its like to have the BBS on the web :-) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Bob W. Make sure you back your conference links. Chas.: Bob W. - U mean my SE/30 dosent't count??? Brian (Wang's): How much traffic can one machine handle, web, tfclients on a 160mhz+ class machine? Bob Wright: Bob N: right! I got that :) Bob Wright: Chas: SE/30's a great machines :) rusty: but it is still a good idea to use path memory in a big move Bob Wright: Well, the 8550 wil not only run TF, but will also be our Union catalog for the school division's entire library database Chas.: good 4 my temp/beta...till I come up to speed... Bob Wright: btw, what is the max number of users I can have with TF? (is RAM my limit?) rusty: ram is the lmit Bob Wright: ok, I guess with 128mb I will be in good shape ;) Brian (Wang's): Get a 9500 with 768mg and run telefinder in Ram. rusty: you need this amount of memory: 2mb base Chas.: Jose, still unable to utilize TF mail with ip address only...may I call later??? rusty: + web cache memory ( num files * num k ) rusty: + 150k * num bbs nodes rusty: + 150k * num pop3 nodes rusty: + 150k * num web threads SpiderJose: Chas, please call... rusty: you should be left with about 20% free in TF's partition when it is running rusty: ( as you look at it from Finder's about screen ) Bob Wright: ok :) SpiderJose: Chas, what's happening with mail going to your IP? rusty: for our server we have 20 web threads ( 3mb ) Brian (Wang's): Brian (Wang's): Can you realm a file? rusty: 120 files * 16k each cached ( 2 mb ) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Does what I assign to the threads and the cache show up in that screen? rusty: 3 pop3 nodes ( 450k ) Chas.: well, thought I had it set up correctly on another mac, to call out... Chas.: dosen't seem to 'dial' out er se rusty: + 14 bbs nodes ( 2.1 mb ) Bob Wright: rusty is a walking statician ;-) Chas.: using another provider to call out/check the ip... rusty: So I set it to 9600 k Chas.: per se... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I think he is helping me figure out how much to assign my machine (other than lots). rusty: maybe I'll put together a Frontier script to calculate it from the web site :) rusty: that would be a good demo Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: It would help a few of us knotheads as well. Bob Wright: haha...yep SpiderJose: Chas, is your server currently on the net? Bob Wright: when one deletes a thread in a conference through TF, how does one also throw out the corresponding folder? Brian (Wang's): How many tfservers are there in the world? rusty: there are several thousand Bob Wright: these little tf things I never pay attention to ;) Chas.: Jose, yes... SpiderJose: What's the IP? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I pull it to the trash and run Max TF repair conferences. Chas.: 207.0.206.250 Bob Wright: Max TF requires ........ (what?) SpiderJose: Chas, Is you net connection full or part time? Chas.: static... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I don't run it all the time I just use it to kill dups in threads, and repair. You just need the parts to upgrade to the latest. His betas are dated. SpiderJose: Are you up 24hrs? Chas.: yes... Bob Wright: Bob N: I meant isnt Max TF an apple script? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: No it runs on its own. I find that it hangs my machine up when I leave it up though. I know that Jonathon would kill me for saying that. What are some of the programs that auto import text into sitc. SpiderJose: Is you BBS up now? I tried to connect bus wa unable to SpiderJose: ...I''m connecting to 207.0.206.250 Chas.: only have 2 nodes...busy... Bob Wright: Yes, I think I have run Max TF and it crashed my machine. Anyting that crashes my machine I dont like running (anything crashing as in something not produced by a "major" company) Brian (Wang's): Unless it is written by microsoft. Bob Wright: so I am hesitant about having to run Max TF to fix folders which do not disapear when I throw out the thread Bob Wright: disappear = get erased Bob Wright: Brian: hahaha....uhhhhh, NO! ;) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: It does have it uses though. The repair and kill duplicate messages is worth it all by itself. The newest version is a bi tmore stable. SpiderJose: Is Mail Server running? Bob Wright: Bob N: what folder is that in on the BBS? Maybe I will look at it again Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: It is in the sysop utils on spider island. I have it on mine in TF Tools Chas.: Jose, yes... Bob Wright: ok..thanky! Bob Wright: Anyone here running vicom's internet gateway? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I dont leave it running however. You might try it a while when you are there to watch it. He keeps working on it. To be fair though it may be something I am doing. SpiderJose: I tried to telnet to your Mail Server and was unable to SpiderJose: Do you have the SMTP gateway installed? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Bob W. when you learn to configure it you can tell us. SpiderJose: Chas, did you get my last two messages? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I think Rusty is reading the docs to Vicom Gateway now? Either that or a jokebook? :-) Chas.: gateway config...name:internet..Xdefault gateway...outgoing domain 207.0.206.250 rusty: just changing the tunes on the CD Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Rusty what great bits of wisdom have you heard from apple if any?? Brian (Wang's): Has anyone played with appleshare on TCPIP rusty: The best news I heard came from Metrowerks! rusty: They have bought a Mac to UNIX prting tool called lattitiude rusty: it's going to be part of the codewarrior package, and will make it easier to get our stuff rusty: running natively under the NeXT OS SpiderJose: Chas, why don't you give me a call... rusty: I don't know exactly whats in and out of the pkg. but its q big relief to know that the "Inside Mac" API's will live on for a while longer Chas.: I will, after the conf... SpiderJose: Chas, try quitting and relaunching the Mail Server rusty: Also, Be is going to focus solely on PowerMac OS development. rusty: no more new "BeBox" machines coming rusty: also... rusty: Brian (Wang's): Be only made beboxs to get people interested. Chas.: Jose, don... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: OS wars? OS/2 vs Windows. Be vs Next?? Bob Wright: Igeesh, so much lag today :/ Chas.: ok...seems to be now starting smtp session... rusty: StarWars is in all 4 "stadium" theaters at the Irvine "Big One" :) SpiderJose: That did the trick...everything should be ok now Chas.: what trick??? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Maybe I ll get out and see a couple this weekend. I think they have some of our local theaters doing the same. Chas.: I've opened/closed it several times... SpiderJose: Chas, any time you make changes to Mail Server, you quit and relaunch it SpiderJose: you should quit and relaunch it Chas.: hmmm...I'll need to ponder that...and get it to run on the other mac... SpiderChris: rusty, but.... is Star Wars going to be in the IMAX? THAT is the question ;-) Bob Wright: Are the user chat profile settings stored in the default settings file? SpiderChris: Bob, they're stored in a file called "TF Chat Prefs" in the preferences folder. currently global to TF/User, but i may be moving those into the settings file in the future. do you have a preference? Brian (Wang's): Well I've got to get back to work. See ya. SpiderChris: take care brian Chas.: Jose, I saw it run the session, but I mailed myself a note last nite, that didn't come thru... Bob Wright: Chris: I dont have a preference, I just want to be able to set up some names with voices and then send that setting along with the TF program to all 29 schools in the district Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Goodbye, I also have to get back to it. Enjoyed the chat thanks guys.!! Rusty those icons up to you this weeked. Happy to do that anytime I can. Hopefully you will be able to use some. SpiderChris: Chas, it may take a while for the mail to come in. Your internet provider may have it queued up. SpiderChris: Bob, yea go ahead and do that then, just send along that file. TF Chat Prefs. SpiderChris: take care Bob Nunn
