Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Test this Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Once in a great while something really coool happens Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: test Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Hello Tom! Guess we are early Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I haven't seen you on the chat before is this your first time? SpiderChris: gotta go... SpiderChris: morning all Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Good Morning! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I installed 7.6 this morning and have a few new voices to try out. Tom Lindo: hello? SpiderChris: Hi Tom. SpiderChris: how's it going? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Things are good for me. My insurance came through on my theft and I found a Radius 81/110 for a good price. Any bad news that you know of on that one? Spider Jose: Hello everyone! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Hey Jose SpiderChris: hi brian Spider Jose: How's everybody doing today? SpiderChris: excellent here jose ;-) Brian (Wang's): Good. Spider Jose: Tom, are you a TeleFinder sysop? Brian (Wang's): I'm on my 6th Install of NT 4.0 and I think it might work (this month). Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: NNoo CCoommppllaaiinnttss ssiinnccee bb1188 ccaammee oouutt ;) Chas.: greetings from sunny FL!!! Spider Jose: Hi Chas! SpiderChris: yikes. what went wrong with the previous installs? SpiderChris: hi Chas Jim Smith-CMUG_BBS: HI ALL Chas.: Jose - having problems w/Mail again... SpiderChris: hi Jim Chas.: have given up on the SE/30...perhaps Mode 32 is problem... Spider Jose: Hi Jim! Brian (Wang's): I uninstall something or it just stops working one day. Brian (Wang's): Nt 3.51 was much better then NT 4.0. The system with word and email and netscape open takes 54meg of ram. Brian (Wang's): Where are the docs for mail forwarding and auto replys? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Chris looks like he's on XTC4UTC.com from his expressions Your Name: hi all Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Hey your name! SpiderChris: Brian, i dont think we've documented mail forwarding yet.... Brian (Wang's): It looks like BeOS is going to b on Motorola clones, Umax and Power Computing. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Your Name - you can change that to something else under edit menu preferences if you want Brian (Wang's): What can you do mail forwarding wise? what text file is needed to do it? SpiderChris: but it's pretty straight forward.... in a user's "Pub" folder, put a text file called "Forward" (or "forward.txt"), that contains email addresses, separated by commas.... SpiderChris: up toe 8k. Brian (Wang's): Can you do autoreplys? SpiderChris: you can include your own name to receive a copy to the mailbox. Ken Sutherland: hiya Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Hey Ken SpiderChris: No, we dont have an autoreply feature right now. SpiderChris: Hi Ken Jim Smith-CMUG_BBS: Hi Ken Spider Jose: Hi Ken Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Chris I got caught by surpise in the latest mail beta you allow us to choose the port. Brian (Wang's): Autoreply would be nice when your away. SpiderChris: Brian, yes it would... i'll look into adding that. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: You have to choose a port for your Gateways to work. I though TFNET was down. Brian (Wang's): That would be cool. Chas.: Jose - wht is the address to send U the bounced msg... Tom Lindo: I'm using geek talk v2.1 .... is that bad Tom Lindo: seems some here are using v1.0.1 Tom Lindo: I mean I have 1.1 Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Shoot I have 1.0 up. Guess its time to upgrade Tom Lindo: or does it not matter... Ken Sutherland: is 1.0.2 ok? SpiderChris: what, what are we talking about.... GeekTalk? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Is the latest Geektalk version on Spider?? Ken Sutherland: yup Tom Lindo: I had a hard time getting geek talk do to an old link but I went into the ftp directory and found this newer of of v1.1 Tom Lindo: this Tom Lindo: this text field.. Tom Lindo: I think... SpiderChris: yea, the current version is 1.1 Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Any undocumented features Chris? Tom Lindo: Is thier a way to stop some video feed, like a push of a button. my connection isn't that fast.. SpiderChris: Ken, hows' the MaxTF beta testing going? Tom Lindo: too many gost images... Ken Sutherland: could simple html be incorporated in text files? Ken Sutherland: lots of fun getting out SpiderChris: Tom, you need to lower you settings.... what type of connection do you have, 28.8? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: FOOD! Ken Sutherland: the security feature is popular, at least it will stop daniel and maricel fighting Tom Lindo: ahh I got it. conference and stop recieving video SpiderChris: Tom, in your local video window, click the settings icon. (the one on the right). For Transmision, min = 5, max = 28, for Reception, min = 5, max = 33 SpiderChris: Ken, html is a possibility we're looking into.... Chas.: Jose RU there??? I sent email to U with the bounced email msg I get from the mailserver... SpiderChris: okay chas, it hasn't arrived here yet... we're watching for it... SpiderChris: okay, it's here... SpiderChris: chas, the message was addressed incorrectly. SpiderChris: Here is the To field: To: Sysop@207.0.206.250 SpiderChris: This is wrong. It will _not_ work. It must be To: Sysop@[207.0.206.250] Chas.: that is the way it was sent from Netscape...b4 Ken Sutherland: Jim,Bob, have you updated max yet? Chas.: ok, will try again... Jim Smith-CMUG_BBS: Have DL max, not installed yet. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I had part of my equipment stolen and have the replacement coming today. I have had a problem with random crashes and handnt been running it. Looking forward to the new version though. Have downloaded it SpiderChris: Chas, i realize, but it's just plain wrong. It may work sometimes. For example, if you add "207.0.206.250" to your local domains, you could send get away with not using the brackets within TeleFinder. But OTHER mail servers on the internet are going to barf on that. They will think the 207.0.206.250 is a domain name, and attempt to resolve it. Ken Sutherland: we need to beat up jose and get him running max,we could then use thecompreseed mail feature Chas.: ok, I was doing it wrong b4..it seems to work now... Bob Wright: Greetings to all! Ken Sutherland: Hi Bob SpiderChris: Hi Bob W! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Hey Bob, got all those bugs out of that 8500 now? Ken Sutherland: Chir, dont move so fast , your bluring up 8-) Spider Jose: Hi Bob W. Bob Wright: Chris and Jose: I upgraded to OT 1.1.1 and that fixed the crashes 8-) Bob Wright: Bob N: have you dl'ed the new MaxTF? SpiderChris: ah, okay ken ;-) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Bob I have been running the 1.1.2 and it seems okay as well. Don't know if there are any major benefits now. Yes I did download the new Max TF but I am switching systems this weekend so I havent tried it yet Jim Smith-CMUG_BBS: Anyone using 7.6 and TF? Spider Jose: We are, jim Ken Sutherland: all i can see is this wee beard flying around my screan SpiderChris: Bob, thanks. Yes, everyone should be using no earlier version of OT than 1.1.1.... there is also a 1.1.2.... SpiderChris: Jim, we're running 7.6 on our BBS. Jim Smith-CMUG_BBS: I am using 1.1.2 Ken Sutherland: your brave Chas.: 1.1.2 here as well... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I just got it and have it on my work system. Will have it up this weekend on Headgap. Bob Wright: Does anyone know how to change the ram in a 8550? I dont see how to get the board out :/ Ken Sutherland: remember that sys 7.6 by default will load ot 1.1.1, not 1.1.2 Jim Smith-CMUG_BBS: big job on 8500 Ken Sutherland: not so big a job on a lc475 Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Yep you have to do it over after you put in 7.6. The apple installer still stinks. You choose what you want and it install everything anyway Bob Wright: yeah, no kidding......I have 128mb to install, but I dont see how to get the board out Jim Smith-CMUG_BBS: after installing 7.6 had to reinstall ot and something else but cantrecall Ken Sutherland: is jose aawake, iv not sean him move in 5 mins Ken Sutherland: thats better Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I think it may be a cardboard cutout :-) Spider Jose: I was doing my famous softshoe... Ken Sutherland: must have been chris hogging the bandwidth again 8-) Spider Jose: Its my specialty =) SpiderChris: Bob W, i dont recall.... if its like the 7100 though, i know you had to remove a bunch of stuff... (like the power supply and drives) to get accesss to the simm slots SpiderChris: well, you know.... Bob Wright: Chris: can you give a "quick" how-to on running a web space outside of the tf server folder. I know to set the dir....anything else to consider? Ken Sutherland: im getting about 1.6fps, can i tweek this Jim Smith-CMUG_BBS: to install Ram on the 8500 you must revome the CPU board to get to the mother board. Bob Wright: Chris: ick....sounds like I am just going to call the tech department for this one SpiderChris: Ken, when you gonna get a camera? Tom Lindo: hey can I try out this microphone feture? Ken Sutherland: no way,jon stole my quickcam, over 5 months now, bummer Bob Wright: Bob N: I never saw your reply about MaxTF: did you get the latest version? John: You gave it to me John: Get a microphone John: :) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I did get it but am moving my system to an 8100/110 this weekend so I am waiting to install first Ken Sutherland: oops, didnt see you sneek in Ken Sutherland: 8-) Spider Jose: Hi John Bob Wright: Jose: the next time I have a problem, I will call you and while I am waiting solve my own problem ;) Spider Jose: Bob W: hehe John: Finally I get connected. IP address was invalid at my end (my IP address) Ken Sutherland: get a good isp SpiderChris: Well, we're at capacity again... 10 users ;-) we need to get the ref running on BeBox soon Chas.: do they make good isp's? Bob Wright: Is it me or is Bob N not talking today? Chas.: maybe we should go to SI chat??? John: 'tis not ISP, tis my PPP software that was problem Brian (Wang's): Is there a way to give tf server more priority then other programs? SpiderChris: Tom, can you turn off your audio? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I did get it but am moving my system to an 8100/110 this weekend so I am waiting to install first John: There's a program called CPUDoubler that lets you assign pr John: iority to selected processes Ken Sutherland: yes,try cpu doubler,it allows you to change load values Brian (Wang's): Has anyone heard when OT 1.5 will be out and will it have the ability to have more then on IP address? Tom Lindo: I got a question about a daystar card... Brian (Wang's): I usally go to the finder and hide others does that hurt anything? Tom Lindo: I got a while back a daystar newbus adaption card for my IIsi so I could use an access. it came with two slots.. I never found out what that other slot was... Tom Lindo: access = acelorator John: no Hiding doesnt affect processor alloc Brian (Wang's): Maybe MacOS 7.7 with the multithreaded finder will fix the problem. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: That other slot is for your ethernet card. Tom Ken Sutherland: dont hold breath SpiderChris: Brian, Finder is going to get most of the priority... Finder is not necessarily a cpu hog, but it's not as fast as keeping tf server in front. perhaps using cpu doubler you could customize things so you could still hide servers while getting them attention that you want Brian (Wang's): With hiding who gets top priority? John: front always Ken Sutherland: got to go,night all SpiderChris: whatever is in front. Finder is really just another application. SpiderChris: take care Ken Spider Jose: By Ken! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: By Ken Brian (Wang's): Sometimes lasso brings filemaker to the front and I want lasso and the web server to be fast. SpiderChris: On our BBS, in Sysop Files -> General Utilities, there is a utility called "Monitor". It will show you exactly what percentage of time each application is getting.... good tool for measuring. John: MaxTF has a feature to automatically bring tf server to the front on idle Bob Wright: Chris: now that I have 125mb of ram, can I run TF in a ram disk? Brian (Wang's): Thanks. SpiderChris: Bob W, yes you can, although i'd recommend perhaps using that ram to set the file caches in TF Server really big.... Brian (Wang's): I saw an add for a new four process pc server that can have 4gig of ram. Bob Wright: Chris: you mean like the web serve cache? SpiderChris: Bob, yes exactly. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Are most people running FreePPP 2.5v2 or something else now?? Brian (Wang's): I've done some testing in ram disk with filemaker pro and it is not always faster then the hard drive and some times it is slower. I don't know why but a fast harddrive will get you more speed then the ram disk. Bob Wright: The harddrive I have says it has a seek time of 7ms so maybe I will just leave it alone :) Brian (Wang's): Quantum has a harddrive that is all ram and very fast. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: If you have lots of ram how far up would you go in terms of allocating memory to the TF programs. Double recommended? Triple?? SpiderChris: sounds interesting.... Tom Lindo: probubly costs a lot... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Anything new and cool this week Chris/Jose. Looks like you guys have squashed the worst of the bugs. Brian (Wang's): I think so but somebody else is comming out with a similar drive so they might be more popular with ram prices be so low. Also one of the big ram makers is building a new fatory that will make 4gig ram chips by 2000 or 2001. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Theyll need them for Windoze 2000 Brian (Wang's): What happened to the user manager on the web client? Chas.: Bob W. - which MaxTF RU using??? Bob Wright: Chas: I tried to dl the latest version (2.0.1 or something) but everytime I try and extract the archive, halfway through I get an error indicating a file already exists John: That is something I have heard from another user. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Are you guys receiving my type? John: I have had no problems extracting the archive myself, however. Chas.: where did U get that...I just called Highlander & didn't see anything there... John: Has anyone here extracted it successfully? Chas.: si~ Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I had no problem. Is someone seeing my type?? SpiderChris: Bob, i got that message.... Bob Wright: Well, it wierd because it wont work for me and I have dl'ed millions of files and uncompressed them Bob Wright: Bob N: YOU SPEAK! Bob Wright: I have been talking to you for 15 min, Bob N, but you did not answer :/ Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I had answered you several times I must have had something wrong. SpiderChris: i think that was the first msg we got from you bob.... Bob Wright: Bob N: did you successfully dl the new MaxTF? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I am installing an 8100/110 this weekend and will try the new Max TF this weekend. I did download and look at the docs briefly. John: Make sure you have the latest stuffit expander Bob Wright: what is the latest version? John: 2.01b1 Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I had no problem. 4.02 for stuffit Chas.: and where did U d/l it from??? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: It comes in the 3.01 Netscape archive. I got it from Spider Bob Wright: I have 3.0.3 of stuffit expander Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: You might want to download a later version. 4.01 or 4.02 John: I have Stuffit Expander 4.01 Bob Wright: ok...I will go out and see if that works :) John: Good Brian (Wang's): Is there a lasso area on spider? I've got a few setups that might be useful for others. Bob Wright: I use lasso :) Spider Jose: No, but we could definitely set one up tho' John: Has anyone tried the 'tfemail' cgi that comes with the latest maxtf release? Brian (Wang's): Please... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Why don't we just send it up to the sysops utilities area? Spider Jose: Thats where I was planning on putting it Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: My insurance came through on my theft and I found a Radius 81/110 for a good price. Any bad news that you know of on that one?I had a breakin last week and lost a lot of my stuff. Bob Wright: Bob N: did you say 4.0v for stuffit? SpiderChris: haven't had any experience with that monitor bob.... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Ha Ha - Radius 81/110 clone. Nubus and 72 pin simms for my older gear. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Its an 8100 in a different box mostly SpiderChris: well, time for Jose and i to get going... any last questions before we take off? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Yes stuffit 4.02 is latest but 4.01 is okay. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Anything new coming. You guys got most of the bugs out looks like. Bob Wright: Chris: any advice on mapping directories? Bob Wright: Chris: anything NEW on m mapping directories ... John: I have a quick question: can the web server be fixed to correctly show the DIRNAME spml variable on directory-mapped roots SpiderChris: Nothing new for that.... and i dont think i have any particular advice right now.... John: ? Bob Wright: Chris: sorry, I meant what is the best way to start using the dir mappings (in terms of setting them up) Chas.: thanks for everyone's time... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Goodbye and Thanks See you next week! SpiderChris: Bob, we use them to setup access to file and conference areas... so they dont need to be located in the home folder, and they can be on other volumes. Brian (Wang's): Thanks. I'll try playing with the priorities. Bye. Ken Sutherland: night all SpiderChris: Yea, that's the way to go.... Bob Wright: Chris: I am going to do the same here because I dont feel like redoing all of my access groups Bob Wright: ok, if I get into a jam, I know who to call ;) SpiderChris: okay, i'm out. take care all, have a good weekend Bob Wright: laterz! Spider Jose: Bye Everyone!
