Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Hey Chas SpiderChris: greetings Chas.: hello from sunny Fla!!! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Hello from rainy Memphis. Chas.: rain??? wuz that??? SpiderChris: we're not really open today, i'm the only one here, but i figured since i'm here i'd hold the chat :-) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Its the wet stuff. We seem to be overwhelmed. Good Friday. Must be nice to take off on the Fed and Banker holidays. We appreciate dedication. JimSmith-CMUG: Hi all Chas.: ahh...off chasing the energizer bunny, eh??? SpiderChris: hi jim. thanks for making that change to Lollipop. Going to set it up today and will let you know how goes.... JimSmith-CMUG: ok Chas.: quick question concerning TFnet & the like... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I will be setting up Lollipop as I move to my new system for the second time. SpiderChris: Hehe... SpiderChris: sure chas.... Chas.: could I say subscribe to conferences say on Bob N board??? Chas.: ala TFNet...providing he agrees... ;/) Chas.: for instance... SpiderChris: dont know if y'all caught it, yesterday we released a new TF Server (b18) and Mail Server (b7)... together they add some SPML commands for sending email.... SpiderChris: the new TF Server also supports W*API and MOSAPI web server plugins Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: You assume that I am smart enough to set up the sending side of TFNET. SpiderChris: Chas, yes that's doable SpiderChris: hehe Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: What are some good plugins other than the Finger plugin. Chas.: in reading the docs, then...I need to use his ip & He would set up an account 4 me??? Chas.: I was trying to set up a quick test LATE last nite on the other mac...didn't get very far... SpiderChris: I'm going to get the Wisdom plugin online shortly... that lets you retreive a random string.... I haven't spent too much time going through the ones online, but we'll have to setup an area on our bbs for plugins that we've tested that seem useful Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Thanks. I will do some exploring and send up what I find. SpiderChris: Chas, yes Bob N would setup and account for you, just like we do here with TFNet accounts... and you would setup a TFNet gateway for Bob N and schedule periodic calls to him Chas.: so I just config the gateway...He would'nt need to do anything 'cept authorize a regular/normal account... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Hello Ramon SpiderChris: Bob N, we haven't tested too many plugins, so there are definately going to be some that dont work.... but so far I think most basic plugins will work, and i intend to get them all working if possible, except perhaps ones that are specific to another web server. SpiderChris: Chas, he would have to setup a similar gateway for you in his mail server, and setup the account in user manager. There really aren't any docs, but basically you're just setting TFNet gateways... SpiderChris: Here's Rusty and Sean! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: What kind of Mac does Sean use?? Chas.: that would be for us to share the conf +/- Chas.: feeds... SpiderChris: Bob N, a PM 6100 ;-) Chas.: a mini-mac??? SpiderChris: althoguh i think he has to share ;-) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Good machine. Have one on my desk. When he gets a little older we can put an 80 mhz clock chip. JimSmith-CMUG: Why is SI so slow for downloads, I DL the TF server and MS about 5AM? SpiderChris: what kind of rates were you getting jim? Chas.: mine started off 800cps then burst to 1700 after the 1st d/l @ midnite...EST JimSmith-CMUG: I don't know but it took the over 40 mi. to dl the TF serv. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Chas, I tell you who is good at this. The guy at Xenon set me up with TCN and helped me a bunch. Chas.: ya, I've chatted with him b4...will do so again, as he has access to some good news groups/feeds SpiderChris: Jim, its hard for me to say exactly. We generally do pretty well with our connection, sometimes there are problems though, not sure if itd be something with our ISP, or something down the line.... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I would be happy to help any way I can and would set up for you to get my info but I would need help too. Chas.: I almost call U last nite... Chas.: called Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Well my voice number is in the library on my system. SpiderChris: I can email you guys a description of how to set that up..... i'll put it on my list to do today or tomorrow..... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Thanks Chris. SpiderChris: chas, what's your email addr? Chas.: sysop@www.talknet.net (TF) or chas@macconnect.com SpiderChris: anyone using Kaleidoscope here? Chas.: I have the manual & have been reading...but it talks about TF Net...I assumed U could sub any other server ip SpiderChris: chas, yea... the manual talks specifically about TFNet, but the same concepts apply regardless of the domains being used.... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: You can but you have to have a sysop on the other end that can set it up to send. I am only set up to receive and had some problems doing that. WIth instructions thought I can work it out SpiderChris: but i realize it's still kinda ambiguous, so if I write up a general description it will be helpful to you and others Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Yes it would. I have Mels screen dumps and they were very useful. Anything you could add about setting up the ohter end would make it easier. Chas.: so in theory, my account at SI would allow me to set-up a gateway??? SpiderChris: um, to do what chas? Chas.: receive tf conferences... Chas.: if I set-up my side...only SpiderChris: chas, well both sides need to do it... you wont receive anything from us unless we setup our side to do that.... SpiderChris: we'd setup a 'gateway' account for you, where the conferences would be spooled to... Chas.: ah... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: You have to beg Jose and it takes 6 months?? ;-) SpiderChris: of course ;-) Chas.: I'll try another test on the other mas/isp ...when I'm awake... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Chris, I would like to be able to fix a conference that has an eof error. Is there a tool that will let me look at how that is set up and modify it? Chas.: Q...does the mail server still have to reside on the same mac as UM? SpiderChris: Bob, actually this MS b7 should do the trick. it should be able to fix that topic when it attempts to add a message to it Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Halleluyah Halleluyah Halleluyah Halleluyah Halleluyah Halleluyah Halleluyah Halleluyah Halleluyah SpiderChris: I never posted the release notes to B7, i need to do that... i added additional topic repairing code that should prevent -120 and -39 errors from occuring. SpiderChris: Chas, no it can be on a different mac. you just need to do the 'link to user manager' Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Great. I have been relying on Max TF and it most times does more damage than it fixes. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Are you working on duplicate removal on usenet conferences? Chas.: ahh...another thing for U & Jose to add to the/my file...running the rocket/cx I'm unable to link to UM anymore... Chas.: it dosen't show up anymore... SpiderChris: Bob N, if you use Jim's Lollipop, you wont have duplicate problems. Just be sure to use the latest version a3 I beleive that Jim uploaded last night SpiderChris: chas, it doesn't show up in the list? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Pulled it down. Have been looking at it. I have 35,000 groups on my server service. That has been a bit of a niggle for me to start with but I will sift throught it. JimSmith-CMUG: Chris, With a dial up PPP connection and calling the gateway, SI for FTNet, I use Applescript, which does not work always. What are others using? SpiderChris: Jim, that's what most people are using, applescript applets. i dont really know anything else that would work... Chas.: yes...MS links fine but TF server - no server or UM shows in box... SpiderChris: Chas, you're linking to a remote mac? Chas.: well, no...all reside on rocket/cx JimSmith-CMUG: boo hiss SpiderChris: chas, well... you shouldn't really be linking then anyway... ;-) only link when you are running a server on a remote mac. Otherwise, let the programs autolink. Chas.: hmmm... JimSmith-CMUG: and that on a 28k dial up connection. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Chris, Is the loss of OT support going to be a real big deal with what is coming to replace it. I know that multihoming was one feature that I needed. Do you think they will add it in a maintenance upgrade?? Whats the word?? Chas.: good question... Chas.: and here are 2 more Q's...can I limit the amount of web space for members??? and can someone u/l a file from their browser to the bbs desktop??? JimSmith-CMUG: I wanted ask that... should we wait for the dust to settle first with apple?? SpiderChris: We wont have any problems with the loss of OT.... SpiderChris: a new 1.1.3 version is coming out soon that fixes some bugs.... SpiderChris: but that may be the last one we'll see.... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Think apple would let you have the source? SpiderChris: What is coming with Rhapsody will be sprockets based.. SpiderChris: so we'll be able to adapt to that rather easily... JimSmith-CMUG: Is SI going to MacWorld Boston? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: BSD - used that on the Amiga. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: When is MacWorld Boston? SpiderChris: even though OT had many problems, it is kinda disappointing to lose because it's a good performer... we're getting really good performance with the recent beta versions under OT SpiderChris: Bob N, I doubt they'll release the source. Chas.: and here are 2 more Q's...can I limit the amount of web space for members??? and can someone u/l a file from their browser to the bbs desktop??? SpiderChris: Macworld boston aug 6-8 SpiderChris: Jim, i'm not sure if we're going yet... we'll probably not make that decision until June or July... but it's certainly possible Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: 1.1.2 seemed stable and fast to me. Will look forward to any other improvements. Glad to hear they fixed that ping of death thing. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I would go to the Boston show if I knew you guys were going. I could use the write off and would like taking my wife to boston for vac. SpiderChris: Chas, currently we do not have controls for limiting web space, it's pretty high on our list to do.... and the upload from browser capability is not quite in there yet, but we've got the framework in place to support that, and it will be an upcoming feature. (so youc an use netscape gold to edit web pages) Chas.: k SpiderChris: did y'all here the story about Larry Ellison perhaps trying to takeover apple? Chas.: when should we be looking for a final release of TF 5.5? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Don't know much about Larry. Whats happening?? SpiderChris: chase, very soon. i think we're finally dont adding features, and just going to get any final bug reports and go. TFWin, TFUser, MS, and UM are set to go, just waiting on a couple things in TFServer Chas.: anyone have any experience with MicroMat/Phonemaker app??? SpiderChris: Larry is the ceo of oracle... he's considering a 1 billion dollar takeover... in which he would promply fire the board of directors, Gil, and his team. He'd bring back Steve Jobs in a significant way. (he's supposedly friends with Jobs). He beleives he can save apple and thinks that the current management is going nowhere. Chas.: money talks...bs...well U know... SpiderChris: who knows if it will really happen... but anything is possible.... he claims he can raise the cash to do it.... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Well they definitely need to do something. Press wise they are getting slaughtered. Chas.: he's done nothing 4 two yrs... SpiderChris: http://www.macweek.com/mw_1113/nw_ellison.html SpiderChris: http://www.sjmercury.com/business/apple/ap032797.htm Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Do you guys participate in any other show Chris. I know that you sneak off and attend a few. SpiderChris: Bob, we've stuck to MacWorlds so far.... SpiderChris: InterNet world might be a possiblity in the future though... SpiderChris: well, i'm gonna head off to do some coding.... SpiderChris: thanks for coming all, have a good weekend! JimSmith-CMUG: I will be going to COMDEX in Hotlanta, User group assoc. JimSmith-CMUG: CU all Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Primary market for you. Still a lot of Mac Web Servers out there. I would think you might find a new customer or two. Booth rentals are expensive. Chas.: when is ComDex??? SpiderChris: Bob, yes they are... that's why we dont do too many shows.... but they're worthwhile when we can. JimSmith-CMUG: Jun 1-5, (1st wk of Jun) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: CU you next time. Have fun. WIll let you know how my move from my Quadra to my 8100. SpiderChris: later all.... Chas.: 'tanks...
