SPIDER CHAT - 1-24-97 rusty: Hi Bob! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I just spent the morning trying to get a monitor to sync with the wrong cable. SpiderJose: Hi Bob! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Good morning Jose! rusty: The demo is up to 22 Mb, but that includes Frontier. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: That'll take a while to download dont ya think? rusty: I think we'll leave Frontier out. its 10 Mb. I'm hoping it will compress well! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Yep. I am very excited. I printed out the docs from the b8 release and you guys did a great job. Cleared up a point or two for me. rusty: It's an automatic BBS and Web site. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I ll have to try it on my alternate system at home.. What would it do to install on an existing set up?? rusty: We've made some changes so that the 'default' config is self installing, including a web bbs, and the Tom Garbanzo personal web site. rusty: You just need to take out the TeleFinder BBS prefs file, and open the demo pack. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Really I have always thought the best way it to show examples. My best pages are stolen and borrowed bits and pieces. rusty: You can take a peek -- its running now at http://explorer.spiderisland.com Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Are you going to break out the pieces for download as well. I am anxious to get Wang's Web BBS working so it will display the gifs. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Hey Bob Wright that quick cam is not a clacker... Bob Wright: this reminds me to NEVER move your quickcam once you get it working ;-) SpiderChris: i use scotch tape... rusty: Never switch ports! Bob Wright: I switched ports the other day because I hooked up the Internet Gateway demo :/ rusty: The QC software only lets you choose at install time. Bob Wright: I forgot to put the quickcam back :/ Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: How many web bbs's do you suppose are up now? I have seen yours, mine (headgap), and klonezone. SpiderChris: you can change the port with QuickMovie.... or QuickPict, the utilities that come with the cam... Bob Wright: I gotta a q: rusty: ga Bob Wright: is it possible for TF User to tell you which you did worng with password or login other than saying: one of them is worng? Bob Wright: I have kids here using TF and at 11 years old, its easier if they know which one, or at least give them another chance before just kicking them off rusty: there's MacConnect, Sunflower, and Quadra.net. Bob Wright: my logs are nothing but bad logins over and over...and at such a young age, their right brain has not told them that perhaps its not their password but their LOGIN that is wrong rusty: I think it might be possible to have 2 different messages. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I will have to hunt the numbers up on sunflower and quadranet. I have been on Mac Connect but its been while. My web traffic has picked up substantially. Bob Wright: that would be helpful for me and the clients that I serve with TF :) rusty: wait rusty: if the name is wrong, it prompts them to create an account. rusty: ^bob Bob Wright: well, only if you allow that feature, which I dont because I dont want any joe blow user signing up for K12 service rusty: oh rusty: you can turn it on, but not auto - register Bob Wright: the last thing I need is for some idiot to get on the system and "stalk" the kiddies :-/ rusty: just log the requests rusty: In BBS Options turn on Regsiter, and OFF Auto Register. That should help Bob Wright: well, the only problem there is they would be creating a new account? rusty: If they fill out the form, the answers will just go into the newusers file, not into the TeleUsers database. Bob Wright: I want them to use the one they have and realize they have made a typo Bob Wright: I am not being picky or critical here :) ...just trying to make things run smooth :-) rusty: no, i understand, this is just smoething you could try now, instead of waiting for us. Bob Wright: gotcha! :) but I would still have to look at the file and then notify them that they already have an account. Its easier to leave it like it is and let them call me on the phone after 20 attempts ;-) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Rusty, Did you ever have anyone mention the problems with the realm settings getting garbled? I changed the file to simpletext and manually wrote it. The problem is solved, was there a problem? rusty: Not that I've seen Bob Wright: how about this: can you give me the resedit resource ID for that window so I could go in and change the message that is presented to be a little more "child friendly"?? Brian (Wang's): Hey Bob did you find out anything on the webserver and gifs. rusty: Just use the "wrong password" mesaseg edit dialaog.. Its in the BBS menu. Bob Wright: ahh...gotcha :) Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Not yet but they are about to release the update with a lot of features. I take it that it will be out today? Brian (Wang's): I've been playing with the new server b8 and it is very cool. rusty: Please let me know if you find a message that works, we'll put it in as the default. rusty: b9 will be out today. Bob Wright: ok :) Brian (Wang's): Cool.... rusty: We've decided to call it version 5.5 Brian (Wang's): Have you guys looked into doing mail with bbs.spml? rusty: The DL will be BIG. Brian (Wang's): I made a link to the my mail directory and I can read the mail. Bob Wright: have I missed what features have been adde3d with MS? I see the new versions, but not the announcement rusty: I think we'll stick with POP3 for email. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Did you make any changes to the info going into the reg log? rusty: I don't think so rusty: you mean the BBS or Web one? SpiderChris: Bob Wright, bug fixes and some small features added, nothing significant for this release. We have some bigger changes in progress however. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: The web one. It would be nice if more info was stored in the user manager file. Bob Wright: I hate that ;) Brian (Wang's): When I upgraded to b8 my modem ports lost their settings, I had to reconfigure each one. Bob Wright: Chris: ok, thanks. rusty: You can add as many fields as you like to the web form. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I guess I really don't understand how it gets auto imported into the user manager. rusty: It just uses the "Create a User" appleevent, just like the BBS does. It only provides the name and password, the rest comes from teh "New User" settings. rusty: Hi Mikael! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: So if I set it properly I could import the email address say into the phone number field? SpiderJose: Hello Mikael! rusty: No, the Ph. field is too small. rusty: You really need to keep that kind of info in FileMaker. rusty: We'll be beefing up UM's storage capabilities, but you'll still need FM for general pupose stuff. Bob Wright: FM = More ram :-/ Brian (Wang's): Is there any way to have fm as the user manager? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I guess that will do it for now. Always looking for a more automated solution. Bob Wright: I read FM as frontier...sorry, I see you were saying Filemaker :)P rusty: No, Fm would be a very very slow User Manager. rusty: + it can't store a user record the way we have it written rusty: + it can't edit an Access Group file Brian (Wang's): So you would have to do apple events. rusty: Frontier rusty: B9 works very easily with Frontier Bob Wright: Can you add nother field to the UM? Something like a Name Field (already implemented) but then a login field/ Brian (Wang's): I saw somewhere on the web that a new version of frontier is out. 4.2 rusty: prior versions required tweaking some of Frontiers internal handlers SpiderChris: that will be part of a future version of User Manager Bob. rusty: that made it useless for everone except Stephen Tallent :) rusty: But this version works great. Bob Wright: Chris: ok, that will be great. Right now I am using the phone filed for the name filed and the name field for the login rusty: I'd like to wrap this up early today so that we can get the new Betas and demo packaged rusty: any last q's before we go? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Sounds like a plan, Thanks guys will be looking forward to the release. Bye now Bob Wright: enjoyed it. see everyone later. :) SpiderChris: bye all.. :-) Brian (Wang's): bye. rusty: ok -- see you next week!
