Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: They left my main system, my big screen, and my Connectix Camera. Bizarre?? R3: u gotta make sure the serial numbers are reported as stolen with more than the local cops. Brian (Wang's): Hey. R3: hola brian SpiderChris: Hi Brian Spider Jose: Hi Brian Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Yep and getting a list together now. GLad that headgap system is still in tact. I cant hardly believe it. I guess it running with activity made them nervous. Brian (Wang's): Whats's the subject today? SpiderChris: no particular subject today brian.... Brian (Wang's): Is there a way to get sendmail type features into TF? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Chris in the last client b16 - I noticed that if you cut and paste info in your can't scroll back to the top? SpiderChris: Rusty will be posting a new version of TF/Server today... as Mikael mentioned, some of the transfer speeds seem to have improved quite a bit using Open Transport, but perhaps MacTCP as well. SpiderChris: There is a new TeleFinder/User online now that contains this change. R3: ok chris... I guess the boss isn't here cuz he went to hawaii just in time to get stranded by american airlines...<:-) SpiderChris: Bob, that bug has been in there a while, but i've been working on it, i'm hoping to have that fixed next week. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Great! There is a slow ot patch out there is it worth running. SpiderChris: hehe Russ. Nope, Rusty is just out of the office for the next hour or so.... Brian (Wang's): In the status windows for the ports does the last logged in user stay until the server is restarted? R3: about the patch... it depends on what you are using to connect to the isp. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Well we are using a router to isdn here at wangs and I am using a 33.6 modem at home. Mikael Fredriksson: That patch should work in ISDN and on modems SpiderChris: Brian, that's correct... it will show the last user logged on, until a restart of the node. Brian (Wang's): One feature I would like in the smtp of TF is to be able to filter addresses and have an alias list. R3: furthermore... I saw no difference on my 950 running over a 56. SpiderChris: Brian, i'm working on the next version of Mail Server which will support MX record resolving so that it will not require a host to pass outgoing mail though. Brian (Wang's): Cool! Spider Jose: Hi Chas Chas.: good afternoon...late but never the less... SpiderChris: (just to clarify, that wont be part of 5.5... it's a larger undertaking than that ;-) the "next" version ;-) SpiderChris: Hi Chas Chas.: since UR talking about mail servers... R3: I am toying with the idea to install MAE on my sparcstation and run TF as a Mac app on the sparc... anybody used MAE? Brian (Wang's): We have a unix machine and I took a look at sendmail and the book alone is to many pages to read for a normal human. But sendmail does have some features that are not in many other mail servers. Chas.: how much memory should I allocate to it??? & why do some have trouble sending mail to me even tho the server is up??? SpiderChris: R3, i've been told by Daniel O'Leary that TF runs under it, but that's all i know.... i have never used it myself. SpiderChris: Chas, how many SMTP servers do you run? Chas.: well, I have just 2 now... R3: be careful brian... use sendmail 8.8.3 and up only... too many holes in the lower versions. Spider Jose: What type of problems are your users experiencing? Chas.: they say it bounces back...I think I saved one of their dialogs from their bounce... SpiderChris: Chas, the default memory is fine. (preferred 2000). That works well for up to 3 servers, each server adds about 170K of memory. Brian (Wang's): I have a couple of friends and the U of M that have beOS and they say it crashs a lot. I'm going to take a look at their setups some time next week. SpiderChris: Chas, Mail Server will take advantage of extra memory though, so if you can run it with say 3000 you'll get some modest speed improvement. but unless you're running a very busy system, it may not necessarily be worth it. Spider Jose: What did the message say Chas? Brian (Wang's): The sendmail I am playing with are internal and they don't know how to get to the internet. Right now TF and emwac on the NT are the only mail servers. SpiderChris: Chas, if you can send me a bounced message, i can probably give you an idea why it bounced. Brian (Wang's): I've had a user complain about not getting email from an internet source. Is there anything I should look for or is there something I can test for to see if TF is droping messages. Maybe just addressing problems.. R3: chris... do you use port 106 for password verification in addition to 25 and 110? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Hello Jim Smith! SpiderChris: R3, no we do not..... Spider Jose: Hello Jim and Bob W! Bob Wright: Greetings to all! Jim Smith-Columbia, SC: Hi all. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: How is your system coming Bob W? SpiderChris: hello Bob W! SpiderChris: hello Jim! Bob Wright: I have a Pathmemory Q: If I had all of my TF data on an external had, and used pathmemory to save my paths, them oved the hd to the new machine, whj is it I get "path not found" erroros on the new machine when I try to restore? Bob Wright: external had = external hd R3: bobw... the drive name needs to be the same? SpiderChris: Bob, the path of the external needs to match the new machine (at least temporarily). SpiderChris: so, the drive names and the subfolders neeed to match. Chas.: in a similar Q...I have just a few users that ger an error -54 msg when they read news...after they trashed TF prefs, but as guest they can read msg fine... Bob Wright: Oh, so the new Internal HD needs to be called the same? SpiderChris: if you want, you can change the naming temporarily, run pathmemory, and then change them back. SpiderChris: right. R3: bobw... only till u can change it. Bob Wright: Booting old machine now to get the name of the hd....I cant believe I forgot the name of the thing ;-O SpiderChris: Chas, -54 is "software lock on file". A file (perhaps the topic) has been locked in the Finder. Choose "Get Info" and unlock the file. Bob Wright: Bob N: we shall see how things are going in about five minutes :) R3: once it's up, then you can change all the paths to what u want it to be. SpiderChris: Bob W, the next beta of TF Server actually includes the path memory functionality built in, so really PM will be obsolete. Chas.: error -54??? Bob Wright: Chris: ok, thanks! I noticed the date was 1995 so I was a bit skeptical about its use :) SpiderChris: ;-) R3: about -54... maybe he needs to go to resedit and fix the lock? Chas.: hmmm... Bob Wright: Still getting "the thread index file is missing" error # -120 Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Good programs don't need as much updating ;-) SpiderChris: Jim, are you a TeleFinder sysop? Jim Smith-Columbia, SC: Yes. CMUGBBS. R3: chris... could you modify geektalk to use the TTS for messages? SpiderChris: TTS? text to speech? Brian (Wang's): The TF server has been working great and I like the new user manager. I have been doing a lot with lasso and I've got a good start on a help desk database on the web. Bob Wright: Any help with error -120 on pm? R3: yup. Bob Wright: Internal and external HD's have the same original name now...still getting error -120 SpiderChris: Russ, it does! Although your version doesn't perform speech too well... but from the '?' popup menu, choose "Voices On", and in "User Profiles", chane the "Default User" to have a voice from the popup menu. SpiderChris: GeekTalk 1.1 is online at http://www.spiderisland.com/~chris/geektalk/ SpiderChris: Russ, the same TTS feature is of course in TeleFinder/User ;-) Bob Wright: Never mind the help with -120, I just figured it out ;-) Bob Wright: I forgot I had named a folder on the internal hd with the same name as the one on the internal hd...I put the wrong one in the trash :-/ SpiderChris: Hello Stephen! stephen: hey chris R3: I'm gonna go bye-byes for a few minutes, get the latest... etc. SpiderChris: Hey, we're at our 10 user limit, so Jose is going to join me in this office so we can squeeze one more person in if need be ;-) stephen: Whats the topic today? Brian (Wang's): I don't remember this many people a few weeks ago. Cool. SpiderChris: stephen, no topic in particular, but i was mentioning earlier that rusty will be posting a beta of tf server today, and there's already a new tf user, both have open transport and zmodem speed improvements.... stephen: Cool. Chris, what kind of changes are under the hood of the latest UM betas? SpiderChris: Brian, indeed. we'll have to get a larger license for the reflector. stephen: no notes stephen: Any good AE stuff? Brian (Wang's): I have been using the new PC client and it works pretty good. Not aas many gpf an hour. Brian (Wang's): How much does a reflector cost machine and all??? SpiderChris: stephen, nothing under the hood, mostly UI changes and you've seen in the alpha... but there is a new version of UM that is a complete rewrite, and will strengthen the scripting support in particular by making the apple events work better with fronteir and applescript Bob Wright: If my mailpaths are wrong, why doesnt "check user's mail paths" repair? stephen: I guess when is a stupid question. SpiderChris: Brian, the white pine reflector is expensive. Around $2000 i believe. if you have access to unix, and dont necessarily require color support, you can run the Cornell reflector for free. Chas.: another comment about UMb...I was unable to set mail path when creating new user...could set other spec, but wouldn't create mail path...had to type it manually... Brian (Wang's): thanks. stephen: Brian, we run the linux version. its free and pretty good if you know unix. Bob Wright: Is there a FreeBSD version? SpiderChris: Bob, yea Jose and I were just discussing that here (check mail paths). i think we agreed that we need to stengthen that quite a bit.... Brian (Wang's): What does the white pine reflector offer over a free one. Bob Wright: Chris: yes, because my paths were wrong, but checking said "no mailboxes created" yet the paths were wrong. So I had to export users and reimport them..... Bob Wright: Chris: now I dont have my access groups for each user set correctly :-/ SpiderChris: Hi rusty! SpiderChris: Brian, multi conference support and color video support. SpiderChris: brian, also runs under windows Brian (Wang's): How was hawaii rusty? SpiderChris: Bob, yea.... rusty: ??? stephen: Hey Rusty. Thanks for all the hard work on TF Server lately. SpiderChris: right now it will create mailboxes if the mail path is missing, of if the path is invalid and there is no mailbox.... rusty: Just a check up for Diana to see how the baby's coming along SpiderChris: if the path is wrong, it may get overlooked. i will be looking at that. rusty: should be any day now Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: First one?? rusty: 4th Bob Wright: Chris: what about setting the access groups? I am going to have to reset all my users?? :-/ SpiderChris: Rusty, Russ Reynaga was starting a rumor that you were in Hawaii... i denied it, really! Brian (Wang's): As cold az its been I think Hawaii would be more fun. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Ur Kiddin? SpiderChris: Bob, no.... access groups work the same way.... rusty: nope its twue! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Well Congrats, your more experienced that I am. Going okay I take it. Bob Wright: Chris: actually I will have to reimport each access group by users, right? rusty: btw - we'll have a b14 Server release today. SpiderChris: Bob, i'm confused. you shouldn't have to change anything with access groups. rusty: it cleans up a few of the glitches in b12 Chas.: gee...I'm still on 10... stephen: Rusty, Server is rockin here. Thanks for all the new stuff. Bob Wright: Chris: well, all I did was export users and reimport them so the mailpaths would be correct. At that time I lost my access privs for each user rusty: the xfr rates really crank in b14! rusty: at least 4x faster at the top end than any prior version Chas.: xfer as fast as Hotline??? (that program has driven me crazy...) rusty: Can hotline do 400k cps? Brian (Wang's): I was changing a few ports today and it looks like the ip address doesn't matter, does it? SpiderChris: Bob, ahh... i see. hmmm... yea, then the access groups to get lost... if most of your users are in the same access group you can use the global "change access groups" command.... Mikael Fredriksson: Rusty, I love the speed improvments in the new server stephen: Whoa, that sounds like fun, Rusty! SpiderChris: and then just change the ones that need to be changed. otherwise, you're right.... importing selectively with the default settings changed would work too SpiderChris: Brian, correct the IP address when setting up nodes is disregarded. rusty: running a "pounder" type test program against the web server we got up to 9.7 megabits/sec output Chas.: I seem to notice an improvement since I switched from the LC to the ci with a hustler card...not sure tho... Bob Wright: Chris: haha....29 schools with four different access groups per school.....hahaha...luckily I have a database in FileMaker Pro which I will export per user per access group. I bit hectic, but it will get me back to normal :) Brian (Wang's): Why is the IP address there? rusty: 10.0 is the max for our ether net stephen: Rusty, I am surprised the mac can handle that kind of throughput.Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Stupid OJ Screen Saver!!! rusty: That was on a 9500/132. Bob Wright: Bob N: I just thought you owuld want to know this: MaxTF ran for 72 hours without a crash SpiderChris: Brian, basically because the code for making/accepting connections between TF/User and Host is the same. I think we'll change TF Server to remove the field for the ip address. stephen: Built in ethernet or a good NIC? rusty: we're getting a little less on the 601/120 rusty: built-in etnernet stephen: very sweet. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I think I found out my crash problems. Quadra's and 7.5 have a bug when combined. It goes off randomly. I don't think 7.6 will fix it either. Bob Wright: Bob N: ahhh...well, it ran good here on the 5200 with 7.5.5 rusty: Internet connections ( BBS and Web ) seem to pumping at the max connecion speed of the clients pipe to our T1. rusty: The T1 is 1.5 megabits, or about 1/8 of the ethernet speed. Brian (Wang's): Time for a T3? rusty: :) rusty: We could fill it! Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Paired T1's? Brian (Wang's): Do you guys max out the T1 very often? Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Only when I am downloading beta software rusty: No, we don't get enough hits for that stephen: Hey Chris, what is the timeframe for the reworked UM? rusty: So Chas, what speed can Hotline do? Brian (Wang's): Some of the places in town that go through bbmplant have gotten heavy packet loss over T1 make it about have a T1. SpiderChris: stephen, i dont have one yet... i'll let you know, particularly for the apple events, i'll want to have your input early.... Mikael Fredriksson: Bob N: I think you should upgrade to System 7.6 my Q950 is more stable than with 7.55 stephen: We are creating some systems to automate info from a clients Notes Database into usermanager and could use some more stuff. stephen: I hate Notes. Brian (Wang's): I did some route checks and stuff in memphis is going to atlanta and back just to go down the street. Chas.: sorry, stephen...was out getting current TF betas... rusty: The Quadra/7.5 bug I know of affects the AV generation Q's ( 610 and so on ) SpiderChris: welcome back russ Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I probably will but there is a fundamental flaw if you run macsbugs you can see it. It is like a time bomb and will cause a random crash at the same addres usually. Since part of my equipment was stolen perhaps I will get a pwer pc. R3: thanks... it don't seem to work... rusty: You can detect it with Macsbugs by finding a bad heap right afetr start up Chas.: hotline seems quick 2.5k+, but is weak...not nearly as robust as TF...great ftp thing... Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Rusty I built a quick system from 7.6 using the tools disk and the same error is present. rusty: That seems very slow, is it a 28.8 connection? Chas.: You must have OT for it to run, so that locks out some people... rusty: 7.1 is the last 'good' system I know of for those Q's Chas.: well Rusty, I've seen 50+ people on a T1... Brian (Wang's): When is the PC version of TF client going to support 95 and NT for file names? I hate sending files over to the server only to have a nice html file name turned to juck. Chas.: but I was geting that & running TF at the same time on this poor old ci... Chas.: with 2 xfers on this end... rusty: I don't know what TF will get you on a CI, but on a powermac you can get the T1 maximum rusty: 2.5k is way below T1 max Chas.: I can't complain...we're only on 28.8...can't ask 4 too much... R3: well 'da chicken seems to be back for what its worth... R3: wha happened? SpiderChris: sorry, reflector just decided to quit by itself ;-) Bob Wright: I can get 16k on my ISDN line R3: what is it running on? rusty: PC :( SpiderChris: well, i think it's time for us to head out for today. Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: I think about 12k is all we ever get on our ISDN. rusty: its the WhitePine w95 demo Chas.: but we are a non-profit...$35/mo 4 me... Chas.: well, until next week...thank 4 the input... R3: what... rusty pls tell us if we have to get a cigar in the mail. <:-) Chas.: cybercigar rusty: Any last Q's before we wrap up? rusty: Can't smoke'em yet Bob Wright: See everyone next week. Have a good weekend Bob Nunn ¥ Headgap: Rusty I was telling the guys my house got hit. If someone show ups with my TF System number let me know. Goodbye rusty: my $ on placed on next Tues R3: yes... but I can do it on TF rusty: u betcha Mikael Fredriksson: Bye from Sweden! SpiderChris: my money is on monday. R3: rusty and chris... meet u on tf?
